The Career Centre is the source for career and employment information and expertise at the University of Alberta. We strive to empower U of A students, postdoctoral scholars and alumni from all faculties and programs to develop the skills, knowledge, experiences, and connections they need to confidently manage their careers. Position 

Career Coaching is an individualized service to support students, alumni, and other clients navigate complex career transitions, challenges, and obstacles. Career coaching helps clients move forward in their career management by developing agency and taking action. Career coaching supplements the Career Centre’s advising services by providing concentrated support over several appointments.

The Career Centre also manages an asynchronous, online career management course that is open to all U of A students. This course supports students to reflect on their career interests, map their next steps, learn diverse work search strategies, and more. The course provides just-in-time information to clients as well as supplemental information to other programs and services.

Reporting to the Manager, Career Education, the Team Lead, Career Coaching is responsible for the development, delivery, and overall management of career coaching services and the Career Centre’s online career management course. This includes encouraging and facilitating student and alumni engagement, supporting the success of clients (prospective students, current students, postdoctoral scholars, alumni, community members) enrolled in coaching, and evaluating all aspects of programming to ensure that goals are being met. This involves collaborating with other staff at the Career Centre and across the university and securing partners and cohorts of learners on campus to participate in the programming.

Duties 

• Oversees the Career Centre’s online course, including creating and updating content, evaluating course outcomes, and working with external instructional and course designers
• Supervises career coaches, providing direction and guidance on immediate and long-term tasks
• Develops, implements, and regularly reviews policies and processes related to registration and payment, tracking client activity, and supports client interactions with coaches, partners, and other Career Centre programs and services
• Initiates relationships with, and responds to inquiries from potential clients, and individual/organizational partners both on and off campus
• Gains support from and builds relationships with individuals and units on and off campus that offer programming that aligns with or can be supported by career coaching
• Collaborates with the Manager, Career Education and Senior Career Advisor to develop, schedule, and deliver presentations and group coaching sessions
• Provides individualized career coaching over several appointments that support clients in identifying and addressing barriers, creating goals, and taking steps to achieve them
• Facilitates targeted group learning activities, both in person and online, with diverse groups varying in size
• Leads and participates in the development and maintenance of a variety of educational materials
• Implements evaluation tools and monitors evaluation results on an ongoing basis and uses data to make recommendations for program changes

Minimum Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in education, social sciences or related discipline; equivalent combinations of education and work experience will be considered
• Minimum three years related work experience
• Experience or education related to career development, experiential learning and community engagement
• Demonstrated experience with coaching and/or advising clients with highly variable backgrounds and career goals; coaching certification is an asset
• Experience developing and/or facilitating online courses
• Understanding of the needs of students, alumni, and other stakeholders in a university environment
• Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain positive, professional, collaborative working relationships with both internal/external clients and stakeholders at all organizational levels
• Excellent communication (written and verbal), presentation, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate with and support students, employers, and colleagues from a wide variety of racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds and various abilities, lifestyles, experiences, and interests
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively to accomplish organizational goals
• Ability to manage time and workload effectively and meet deadlines
• Proven ability to apply and adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines, FOIPP, records management protocols, and all relevant university policies

Preferred Qualifications

• Possesses 3 to 5 years experience hiring, supervising, mentoring, and managing employee performance within a large, complex, unionized environment. Prior U of A experience in a supervisory role is considered an asset
• Commitment to ongoing training in administrative and technical skills (e.g. database and/or software updates, online learning platforms, marketing strategies, project management, emerging practices in experiential learning and career management)
