SOCI 1P90 – Introduction to Sociology l

Compensation 

Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds. 

  • Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate – $22.07 per hour. (Rate effective September 1, 2024)
  • Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate – $34.73 per hour. (Rate effective September 1, 2024)
  • In cases where additional duties are required as part of a Teaching Assistant’s duties, these hours shall be compensated at the appropriate Teaching Assistant rate.

Duties 

The duties and responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant shall be in accordance with Article 22 of the CUPE Local 4207, Unit 1, Collective Agreement. These are made up of scheduled contact time with students and non-classroom time (including preparation of seminar material, student consultation, marking or grading, examination proctoring, attending lectures, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required.

Qualifications 

  • Masters Degree or Honours Degree in Sociology or equivalent. If vacancies remain, students enrolled in an Honours Program (completed 15 or more credits) in Sociology or equivalent* (with an 80% average or higher) will be considered.
  • Completion of the course for which the applicant wishes to be a teaching assistant with a final grade of 75% or higher in that course (or equivalent*)
  • Demonstrated teaching competence. (eg. summary of previous course evaluations, faculty evaluations)
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet stipulated deadlines, recognizing that there are periods of intensive work associated with the position.

  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to demonstrate how his/her degree and training are equivalent. Likewise, it is the applicant’s responsibility to identify the course for consideration of equivalency. For courses taken at Brock, identify the course (i.e., XXXX 3P00). For courses taken elsewhere, provide a transcript (a copy of your course and grade summary from your student selfservice at that institution is sufficient); highlight the course and provide the course description. Failure to provide the required documentation to support the request for consideration of equivalency will result in an incomplete application.
  • Equivalency will be determined by the course instructor, in consultation with the selection committee. Applicants must make a case that their qualifications are equivalent to those required above.
