Teaching Assistant Professor in Film and Media Studies (Film Program, English Department)

The Department of English at the University of Pittsburgh seeks an appointment-stream Teaching Assistant Professor in Film and Media Studies with an open critical studies specialization. We are a well-established Film and Media Studies Program (FMS) that integrates production and critical studies with classes also available in broadcasting.  This is a full-time, renewable position for an initial term of three years with the opportunity for promotion and career advancement. The position will begin on September 1, 2023.

We are looking for a versatile instructor with a terminal degree (Ph.D.) in Film and Media Studies or a related field by the time of appointment (September 1, 2023). Competitive candidates should have wide competencies in critical studies, as they will teach core introductory courses such as Seminar in Composition: Film (a first-year writing course), Introduction to Film, Film Analysis, Gender and Film, and World Film History.  We especially welcome a candidate who can teach courses in new media (Cinema and Video Games, Introduction to New Media, Visual Literacy, Technologies of the Body) or media industry studies. The successful candidate will develop additional courses for innovative new interdisciplinary majors such as Digital Narrative and Interactive Design (DNID) that center on issues of inclusive design, accessibility and design, and diversity in technology.  We welcome pedagogical approaches that connect issues of racial justice, climate, and environment, disability and accessibility, or gender and sexuality to contemporary digital modes.

This position comes with a 3/3 teaching load, with the expectation of service to the FMS program and English department. Service may include assessment, course development support, directing independent study projects, overseeing digital publications, and organizing events such as our annual undergraduate symposium.
