The School of Healthcare Sciences is looking to recruit to a Teacher post within the Operating Department Practice (ODP) Team.   We welcome applications from clinicians and academics in Operating Department Practice or Perioperative Practice.

The School of Healthcare Sciences is a major provider of health care education in Wales which has strong relationships with local health and social care providers and a wide portfolio of programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels for UK and international students.  Research led teaching, research activity, innovation and creativity underpins our programmes and scholarship.

Successful candidates without a post-registration Masters qualification will be supported with their continuing professional development.   We normally expect candidates to have current registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) or with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

This a a full-time post, 35 hours per week, but candidates wishing to undertake the role on a part-time basis will be considered.  The post is fixed term until 30 September 2024. Candidates with suitable clinical experience may be eligible for market supplement.

Salary: £35,333 – £42,155 per annum, pro-rata if part-time (Grade 6).  Appointments are generally made the the bottom of the grade.

Job Description

Main Duties

• To deliver a wide range of teaching – lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials – across the operating department practice programme to include communicating subject matter and encouraging critical discourse to develop rational thinking; observing and reacting to student interventions; responding to questions outside class times and to contingencies in course delivery.

• To plan and design contemporary teaching sessions for undergraduate modules using a variety of modalities, specifying learning objectives, resources and reading.

• To carry out student assessment.  This may include designing assessment criteria, marking assessments, ensuring adequate moderation and providing written/oral feedback.  In addition, to support practice assessment and progression.

• To carry out module/course evaluation, including facilitating student feedback; reflecting on own teaching design and delivery; and implementing ideas for improving own performance.

• To carry out a pastoral role for students such as acting as Personal Tutor.  If necessary, referring them to the appropriate authority for guidance.

• To carry out teaching-related administrative duties as required to contribute to the overall management of the ODP programme and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world.

• In all the above, work closely with the Module Lead, Programme Manager and Professional Head.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

Professional qualification in a healthcare discipline, together with relevant clinical experience (usually a minimum of 1 year post qualification.)

Current registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) or Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

Evidence of continuing professional development as applied to operating department practice/perioperative practice.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Proven ability to deliver education and training (to include lecture, seminars, tutorials, small group work etc.)

Demonstrate specialist knowledge of operating department practice theory, clinical and/or professional skills

Proven ability to analyse complex information and summarise appropriately

Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people, including experience of presenting to various audiences

Ability to work on own initiative, planning and setting priorities particularly with regard to teaching sessions.

Ability to undertake appropriate academic administrative tasks associated with the programmes of study.

Evidence of positively contributing within a team working environment.

Desirable Criteria

Hold or be working towards an approved teaching qualification, such as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or equivalent

Hold, or be working towards an MSc in a relevant subject

Experience as a practice supervisor or mentor
