Job Description

The student assistant will work directly with TAMMA Shipboard Crew to support the Deck and Engineering Departments of the Training Ship. This position will require the student assistant to be attentive to the operational needs of the Maritime Academy and actively work to complete the tasks assigned by the Deck and Engineering crew as well other TAMMA Staff. This is a unique student position and offers the cadet the chance to prove proficiency in ability to assist the training ship’s deck and engineering departments in preparing for the summer sea term.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Organize and clean the vessel in order to prepare for the summer sea term.
  • Perform regular deck maintenance and deckhand duties as directed by the Second Mate.
  • Cleaning of heads, decks and trash removal.
  • Prepare cabins for summer sea term as directed by the Second Mate.
  • Mount pictures, posters and safety items.
  • Assist with planning/logistics of Sea Terms aboard the training ship.
  • Compile misc. operations reports and planning documents.
  • Miscellaneous tasks required to facilitate ship operations and other maritime operations.
  • Use University vehicles to pick up supplies and make deliveries as needed.
  • Miscellaneous tasks required to facilitate ship operations and other maritime business operations.

General Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be a TAMMA Cadet.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to perform manual labor.
  • Ability to stand, bend, squat, stoop, reach, climb, lift and/or carry objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to effectively understand and convey written and verbal information in English.
  • Ability to hear alarms and commands, with or without the use of a Public Announcement system.
  • Ability to use basic math.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents in English.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies as directed.
  • Must be able to follow directions, learn from others and make appropriate decisions.
  • Must be dependable and stable under pressure.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner as well as consider new solutions to potential problems both on and off the training ship.
  • Exhibit the ability to identify needs of others (i.e. cadets, professors etc.) and articulate new ways to better meet those needs.
  • Demonstrate a high level of safety awareness when working in hazardous environments both on-board the training ship and on campus.
  • Develop leadership skills to coach and develop other crew members.
  • Identify key strengths that will further the student’s career opportunities in the maritime industry.
