Job Summary
The Systems Infrastructure Research (SIR) lab in Edinburgh is dedicated to shaping the future of Huawei’s data centre infrastructure. Our mission is to innovate, prototype, and assess new ideas, designs, and technologies, ultimately integrating them into Huawei’s data centres for the benefit of both internal operations and external users, such as cloud services. We are particularly interested in the intersection of machine learning and systems research – systems designed for large-scale machine learning workloads, and the application of machine learning to improve system performance.
Our team’s distinct position enables us to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and practical engineering environments, facilitating the translation of the latest breakthroughs into production. Additionally, we actively disseminate our findings by publishing in top-tier conferences, including those focused on machine learning and systems.
Huawei seeks both recent graduates and experienced engineers in computer science and systems, machine learning, or the intersection of both. If your expertise aligns with either systems engineering, encompassing operating systems, heterogeneous hardware, distributed systems, and cloud-native applications, or machine learning, including time series analysis, optimization, and systems for machine learning, we encourage you to reach out.
As an engineer in the SIR Lab, you will collaborate with leading scientists, tackle cutting-edge research problems in systems and machine learning, foster influence in academia and industry through technological innovations, and cultivate partnerships with local and global research teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engage in team projects to conduct system design, analysis, and prototype development, incorporating machine learning where relevant.
- Play a role in selecting research problems, designing solutions, analysing results, and building prototypes to showcase the advantages and challenges of these technologies across various data center and cloud applications.
- Design, implement, and evaluate key technologies and associated algorithms, including those related to time series analysis, optimization, and machine learning systems.
- Actively engage with academia, industry, and open-source communities to establish influence and contribute to the broader technological landscape.
• Contribute to the research and development team’s exploration of emerging technologies and systems, with a focus on machine learning and its applications.

Person Specification:
Required:
- Bachelors or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related technical field.
- Be comfortable with research methodology.
- Be comfortable with system design and implementation, particularly for machine learning workloads.
- Have an in-depth understanding of operating systems and/or distributed systems and/or cloud computing and/or machine learning algorithms.
- Good programming skills, master of at least one language, such as C/C++, Go, Python etc.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
Desired:
- PhD in operating systems, distributed systems, machine learning, or a related field.
- Published papers in top journals/conferences focused on systems (NSDI, EuroSys, SoCC, OSDI etc.) and/or machine learning (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR).
- Experience with systems for machine learning, machine learning for systems, time series analysis, and optimization.
- Experience in the full lifecycle of developing, deploying, and maintaining large-scale cloud production systems, demonstrating expertise in scalability, reliability, and performance optimization.
