Job Summary:

The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) is a part of the National Primate Research Centers program funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 1961. The WNPRC’s mission is to increase our understanding of basic primate biology and to improve human and animal health and quality of life through research. Notable discoveries include the world’s first in vitro-fertilized monkey in 1984 and the first pluripotent stem cells (first monkey, then human) in the 1990s. Our primarily NIH-funded research has helped advance therapies for people with HIV, kidney disease, glaucoma, developmental disorders, autoimmune diseases, mental illness, polycystic ovary syndrome, infections that threaten healthy pregnancies and much more. Our scientists are also at the forefront of understanding how COVID-19 infects the body and how to stop it.
The WNPRC is seeking a System Engineer to support the Information Technology infrastructure used by animal care staff and researchers across the dozens of labs based at the WNPRC. As part of the Information Technology & System Services (ITSS) team, the System Engineer will investigate, implement, and support the hardware and software systems used at the WNPRC. Reporting to the WNPRC Information Technology Director, the successful candidate will integrate systems running on local physical servers with virtual and cloud systems offered by campus, document and update WNPRC network configurations, and utilize scripting to automate routine tasks. The WNPRC has increasingly incorporated genomic data to provide new insights to researchers, and the System Engineer will have an opportunity to connect big data and high throughput computing resources to offer researchers powerful new opportunities.
The System Engineer will support a diverse range of systems, including Linux servers, predominantly MacOS workstations, Mobile Device Management tools, and Storage Area Networks, and will take an active role in planning future upgrades to better meet the needs of WNPRC researchers, staff, and trainees. As scientific equipment increasingly incorporates Information Technology functionality, the System Engineer will find ways to connect and automate data collection for instruments ranging from portable X-Ray scanners, Ultrasounds, Chemistry Analyzers, Mass Spectrometers, and Flow Cytometers, and more.
This position requires a dedication to thorough documentation, as well as the ability to maintain outstanding communication and interaction with many different stakeholders. With the WNPRC research portfolio spanning more than half a century, the System Engineer will have an opportunity to use their Information Technology expertise to support an extensive range of systems from historical studies to new studies on the vanguard of scientific research.
