SWINE CENTER RESEARCH SPECIALIST

The mission of the Center for Biomedical Swine Research and Innovation (CBSRI) is to innovate and accelerate the discovery and development of therapies and technologies that change human lives. CBSRI creates, validates and utilizes porcine biomedical models to translate benchtop research into clinically relevant solutions. CBSRI is seeking an energetic Research Specialist to join the Procedural Core. This position will work closely with a team led by a Research Veterinarian in the day-to-day activities of the Procedural Core, including but not limited to: anesthesia support, experimental surgeries, post-operative care, neonatal care, specialized validation techniques for swine models, and project management. The Research Specialist will also work closely with the staff of various animal research units across campus. We are looking for an individual who is eager to build and strengthen their procedural and hands-on skills with pigs, has a team-oriented approach to problem-solving, and is excited to take lead in achieving the research goals of the various center projects.

Our multi-disciplinary center is a partnership between the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) and the UW Biotechnology Center, working in collaboration with several other centers and units across the UW-Madison campus from biotechnology to state-of-the-art medical imaging.
Primary duties of this position include:
– Providing anesthesia support, performing experimental procedures, and providing post-operative care for pigs
– Preparation for and clean-up after procedures,
– Providing support for porcine reproductive cloning and neonatal care
– Technical and logistical planning, developing SOPs, and scheduling of procedures
– Lead project manager for assigned projects
– Recording and compiling medical and research records
– Managing supplies and inventory, ordering
Some after-hours and weekend work will be required. Travel between the various UW animal facilities is required. Must provide own transportation or a valid driver’s license and eligibility for Car Fleet usage is necessary.

• 50% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
• 10% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
• 5% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
• 15% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
• 5% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
• 10% Coordinates and plans research projects via communication with research teams and various campus units
• 5% Ensures compliance with all standards for animal research: animal protocols, biosafety protocols, animal facility SOPs, etc.

Minimum Qualifications
– Experience working in biomedical animal research or clinical care of animals
Preferred Qualifications
– Hands-on experience with pigs, including but not limited to: animal handling, injections, blood collection, surgical procedures and anesthesia support
– Experience with biomedical research, including but not limited to: data collection, record-keeping, project planning, SOP writing/implementation, compliance adherence
Skills/Abilities
– Motivated to work independently and interdependently within a team
– Excellent written and oral communication
– Ability to work collaboratively on large, multi-disciplinary projects
– Independent problem-solving and analytical skills
– Highly organized and detail-oriented

It is anticipated this position requires most work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Workplace flexibility may allow for occasional remote work, details of which will be discussed upon hire.

The starting salary for the position is $45,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
