Position Purpose

Campus as a living lab framework aims to use the campus as a test bed to incubate ideas and initiatives that have the potential to develop and test new solutions and approaches to address real-world challenges to our planet.

The Sustainability Living Lab Specialist participates in the development and implementation of Brown’s Strategic Sustainability Plan and other priority initiatives. The coordinator will aim to connect campus sustainability efforts with the campus’ academic mission and enhance student engagement across campus. The Specialist will collaborate with the Manager in bridging      the operational sustainability activities undertaken by the University with opportunities for applied and experiential learning, as well as for utilizing the campus as a test environment for sustainability efforts that can transform broader society. This position will engage relevant academic units, in a supporting role, to identify opportunities for faculty to use campus operations, programs, or space as a living lab in relation to the strategic sustainability plan. The Specialist has oversight over the internship program, major University events such as move-out/in and Earth Day, and overall student engagement. The Specialist will participate in the development of an environmental justice & inclusion action plan that will catalyze and facilitate an equitable sustainability culture for the campus that benefits all students, faculty and staff.  

Job Qualifications and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience with program identification, assessment, development and implementation is required.

  • Experience doing outreach required, preferably in a higher education setting.

  • Experience in managing personnel/volunteers preferred.

  • Experience with event coordination and/or planning required.

  • Working knowledge of Adobe software programs including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator preferred

  • Preferred knowledge of environmental principles and practices, including sources of information, current literature and recent developments regarding environmental issues

  • Knowledge of outreach and behavior change theory and techniques, including sources of information, current literature and recent developments regarding environmental outreach issues

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build trust and rapport with colleagues, students, and faculty

  • Strong organizational, facilitation, multi-tasking and time management skills.

  • Ability to take initiative with minimal supervision

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with all levels of Brown University personnel, students, and the public

  • Good problem-solving skills

  • Ability to plan steps and carry out multi-phase projects requiring problem definition and modified techniques, to coordinate work with others, and to modify methods and procedures to solve a wide variety of problems.        

  • Ability to use a computer to evaluate data, prepare and generate reports, maintain databases and associated templates, word documents, presentation materials, and web pages.

  • Ability to coordinate data collection and dissemination with other departments    

  • Requires the ability to work as a contributing member of a team, work productively, patiently, and cooperatively with other teams and external customers

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
