Support the operational and technical requirements for workshops, teaching, and research within the Surgical Skills Unit at Macquarie University


  • Salary Package: From $74,062 to $79,823 (HEW level 4) plus shift loading, annual leave loading and 17% employer’s superannuation.

  • Appointment Type: Full-time, continuing, flexible working week including regular weekend work Tues-Saturday or Wed -Sunday as required.

  • Location: Macquarie University (Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde)

The Role

We seek a Surgical, Skills Operations Assistant to support the operational and technical requirements for the Surgical Skills Unit including events, teaching and research programs and workshops for external clients.

Reporting to the Manager, Surgical Skills and Training this role supports the end-to-end operational requirements for the Surgical Skills unit and its activities. This diverse and interesting role assists the Surgical Skills Operations Officer and the Manager, Surgical Skills and Training to provide operational support for surgical skills teaching, workshops and laboratory events. Duties include assisting with event logistics, catering, liaising with participants on specific equipment setup and requirements for cadaver training events and resolving any event support issues that may arise. This role also undertakes the preparation of human tissue and ensures appropriate specimens are available and prepared for all events and programs.

About You

You will have experience in human anatomy and dissection, including complex dissection in a laboratory environment. Your excellent communication skills, proven ability to work in a team,  capacity to support external professional workshops and understanding of workplace health & safety requirements will ensure your success in this role.

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant subject or equivalent experience.

  • Experience in human anatomy and dissection, including complex dissections

  • Experience monitoring and complying with workplace health and safety requirements.

  • Knowledge of safe handling of cadaveric materials, laboratory chemicals and clinical waste policies and procedures.

  • Advanced computer skills including MS Office, internet-based research and database management.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality.

  • Good time management and organisational skills, with ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines.


  • Working knowledge of the NSW Anatomy Act 1977, NSW Tissue Act 1986 and, other relevant Regulations, Acts and Instruments.

  • Demonstrated experience in technical or operational support in a similar facility
