The Academic Success Center (ASC) fulfills its mission by providing high-quality academic support focused on student learning and success through a comprehensive network of support and referrals across academic and student affairs.  The mission of UT’s Academic Success Center is to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed by providing campus leadership and advocacy for student success at UT and identifying and implementing academic success programs that support progress toward graduation and enrich the undergraduate student experience. The ASC provides in-house academic support to undergraduate students through academic coaching, tutoring, and Supplemental Instruction. In addition, the ASC also serves as a central place where students can learn about and make use of the many academic opportunities and support programs offered within the larger UT community.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Learning Assistance, the Supplemental Instruction Coordinator provides leadership for the Supplemental Instruction (SI) program as well as provides on-site supervision to undergraduate and graduate staff serving as tutors, supplemental instructors, and graduate assistants. The SI Coordinator will work to implement best practices in academic supports, foster a collaborative learning environment, and engage in strategic planning in order to grow and develop the Supplemental Instruction program. The coordinator communicates with campus partners to increase academic support, align curricular needs with academic support services, and manages the Supplemental Instruction and embedded tutoring programs, which includes ensuring oversight and the availability of services during the evenings and on weekends. The SI Coordinator also develops and leads the complex and ongoing training and support to SI Leaders and embedded tutors, which includes the coordination of intensive training sessions that take place during off-schedule hours.

 


Qualifications

 

The SI Coordinator will be primarily responsible for the following:

  • Provide management and oversight of SI daily activities, including on-site and online SI sessions and embedded tutoring;
  • Work with divisions, colleges, and departments to identify regular, consistent, and functional spaces for SI sessions and embedded tutoring;
  • Oversee recruitment, hiring, and orientation of SI Leaders, embedded tutors, and Vol Study Center support staff;
  • Provide mentoring, supervision, direction, guidance, and ongoing support to all SI Leaders and Vol Study Center support staff;
  • Train all SI Leaders and embedded tutors in pedagogical techniques consistent with course content and in alignment with the SI model;
  • Coordinate scheduling and manage all time entry of all SI/embedded sessions and Vol Study Center support staff;
  • Maintain or acquire resources (e.g., technology, content materials, pedagogical materials, etc.) for the SI and embedded tutoring programs;
  • Develop specialized training curriculum using relevant and current SI and learning assistance methods;
  • Work closely with academic departments and instructors to determine course-specific support needs that support the SI model;
  • Ensure high quality and ethical standards for the SI and embedded tutoring programs;
  • Regularly evaluate SI Leaders and assist in evaluations of tutors and Vol Study Center support staff;
  • Coordinate SI, group, and embedded tutoring services for all academic terms;
  • Develop curriculum for and conduct campus workshops regarding general academic support strategies (e.g., notetaking, reading strategies, study skills, study habits, etc.);
  • Participate in continuing education and professional development activities in the areas of Supplemental Instruction, tutoring, study skills, learning strategies, innovative pedagogical techniques, and general academic support;
  • Promote Vol Study Center services, events, and activities via campus partnerships and marketing campaigns;
  • Schedule all SI and learning assistance activities across various campus locations via campus communications and/or software; and
  • Monitor and assess the effectiveness of the SI program, including conducting student surveys, reviewing usage and progress reports, providing impact analyses, and modifying services to meet program and learner needs.

The SI Coordinator will also lead or co-lead student-facing campus events to develop connections with scholars:

  • Engage scholars at new student orientations, open houses and recruitment events;
  • Actively pursue professional development opportunities;
  • Utilize academic software, such as EAB Navigate, Banner, Slate, and other software, to document study sessions and communication with scholars;
  • Use other standard office software to communicate with staff and develop program materials; and
  • Attend weekly leadership and department meetings.

Qualifications

Applicants for the SI Coordinator position must meet the following required qualifications: a bachelor’s degree and one year of experience by date of hire (part-time calculated as half time) working in a higher education, K-12, or community outreach environment

Additional qualifications include:

  • Ability to relate to and effectively establish rapport with a diverse student population, which includes a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • Knowledge of best practices in Supplemental Instruction, tutor training, and learning strategies;
  • Knowledge of University of Tennessee colleges and programs within departments for which the Vol Study Center provides services;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including attention to detail, accuracy, and presentation/public speaking skills;
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize competing demands and deadlines;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including managing conflict and various communication styles;
  • Ability to work independently and utilize sound judgement;
  • Ability to utilize software for scheduling and data-collection purposes;
  • Proficiency with MS Office application, especially Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint; and
  • Must be able to work well with supervisors, colleagues, students, and the university community.

Preferred qualifications and experiences include:

  • Experience working within a Supplemental Instruction program;
  • Experience in a tutoring, SI, and/or leadership role;
  • Excellent presentation and outreach skills;
  • Experience working with diverse populations;
  • Demonstrated skills with software and/or web-based applications; and
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, data driven decision making and relationship building.
