Job Description

 Duties: 

  • Supervises, organizes, coordinates and directs Tree crew. Performs the necessary tasks to accomplish the goals set forth by the Landscape Department.
  • Performs technical and semi-technical duties required in the propagation of trees.
  • Directs and supervises the safe and proper use of equipment and materials, including heavy equipment.
  • Responsible for all pruning and maintenance tasks on campus trees
  • Moves heavy trees and shrubs requiring care
  • Maintains records on tree maintenance activities and equipment usage
  • Identifies trees and shrubs requiring care.
  • Prepares and approves employee time cards and prepares routine reports
  • Performs minor maintenance on chain saws, hand tools, and related equipment.
  • Selects and trains personnel, evaluates performance, and makes salary recommendations.
  • Processes requisitions to stock and maintain supply inventory.
  • Ensures safety of all personnel and proper operation and security of Tree equipment.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.



Job Requirements

Required Education: None

Required Experience: 36 months experience in landscape and grounds management.

Skills:

  • Basic math skills
  • Uses tools or equipment with proficiency
  • Reads and interprets routine materials
  • Highly organized and ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
  • Strong initiative to solve problems
  • Ability to supervise staff and communicate directions and expectations effectively
  • Ability to supervise

Department Preferences:

  • 6 months of supervisory experience
  • Advanced knowledge of horticulture methods and materials, landscaping and cultivation of trees and woody plants

Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license to drive university vehicles or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire date

Advertised Physical Requirements:

  • Climbing and working at extreme heights of 50′ and above.
  • Operating power equipment and hand tools while suspended at extreme heights of 50′ and above.
  • Frequent and repeated bending, stooping, and kneeling.
  • Working with arms extended above head.
  • Frequent lifting and carrying loads up to 100 pounds, up or down stairs.
  • Exposure to physically demanding and potentially hazardous tasks.
  • Loading and unloading truck, manually. Working in extreme weather conditions.
  • Operating power equipment and using small hand tools.
  • Frequent moving of heavy objects.
  • Climbing ladders.
  • Some overtime, including nights, weekends, and holidays may be required.
  • May be designated as an essential position during emergency closures weather or other emergencies.
