Subject Support Officer

University of South Wales

The Faculty of Life Sciences and Education is seeking to appoint a team of staff that will provide individual, professional guidance to students allowing them to make an effective transition to higher education and to subsequently support them to succeed on their chosen degree pathway. Fundamentally, the post holder will work closely with the academic course teams in helping to create a culture of engagement, through developing a positive course identity which in turns leads to a strong sense of belonging for students. In addition, the team will monitor student engagement, retention and performance, and will support students who are experiencing difficult personal circumstances by working closely with colleagues from specialist support services.

The post holder(s) will need to be proactive, adaptable, and a resilient problem-solver, always seeking to enhance the student experience. You will have a positive approach to your work, be a strong communicator, well organised, and committed, with the ability to work alone and as part of a team. The team will be expected to develop a strong awareness of the barriers facing individual students and will be able to work effectively with students from a wide range of backgrounds.

The post holder(s) will normally be based at one of the university sites but may be asked to work flexibly to provide support across any one of our campuses. Duties and working patterns may vary according to service needs. Although the university operates a hybrid model of working, the successful candidate(s) will be expected to work on campus each day within term time with the option of working from home, when required, outside of these times.

These are full time, permanent posts that will support the following subject areas as follows:

Nursing and Allied Health (Glyntaff)

Chiropractic, Psychology, Policing and Criminology (Treforest)

Education and Therapeutic Studies (Newport)

Sport (Sport Park)

Applicants are asked to clearly indicate during the application process which of the subject areas they would prefer to apply for (you may indicate more than one).

For an informal conversation about this post please contact Mr Jamie James, Associate Dean – Student Outcomes [email protected]

If you are a successful candidate and this position will be your first professional services role at the University (or you are currently employed by PSS Ltd), you will be employed by Professional and Support Services Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of South Wales, which provides services to the University and Colleges. If you are an internal professional services candidate, you will continue to be employed by the University of South Wales.
