The Department of Multicultural Services has a mission to provide multiple educational and developmental services for underrepresented and underserved racial and ethnic populations and diversity education programs that foster inclusive environments for all students. The purpose of the department is to support, advocate for and challenge underrepresented students as they transition, work through the impact of identity development, and are confronted with challenges to their perspectives and educate students and student groups about difference through sensitivity, cultural competence, and inclusive leadership training.

In the Department of Multicultural Services, our #1 resource is our staff, and we pride ourselves on the support we provide them. The Student Development Specialist II, will play a vital role and has a focus on the engagement of students who identify as Black and African American through academic, professional, and personal development initiatives, including programming, community engagement and belonging, and leadership and identity development. The Student Development Specialist II, under direction, provides professional skills for developing, planning, promoting, and implementing student developmental programs, activities, and/or services. What you need to know

Salary range:  $36,512 – $42,000 (Based on selected hire’s education and experience)

Position Details: Willingness to work some evenings and weekends, and to travel for presentations and conferences.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One or more years of experience in student affairs work or related specialty with a bachelor’s degree. No experience required with a master’s degree.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate well, both orally and in writing, with students and co-workers.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree.
  • Related extracurricular experience and/or student development experiences with a master’s degree.
  • Student development experience with students from various racial and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Experience working in the area of student engagement and student success.
  • Experience working in diverse environments with students from various racial and ethnic backgrounds.

 

Responsibilities

  • Black & African American Student Engagement & Success – Coordinates all aspects of two student groups, organizations, and developmental programs (annual leadership conference called the Southwestern Black Student Leadership Conference and a cultural community and advocacy organization called the Black Student Alliance Council), targeting students who self-identify as Black and African American. Develops, interprets, and communicates university, departmental, and advising policies and procedures to meet university and student needs.
  • Programming & Leadership Development – Coordinates and facilitates endeavors for higher degrees of recognition and building of collaborative relationships benefiting students, as well as advising student leaders and members on academic, professional, and personal development, problem solving, program planning, facilitation, and assessment.
  • Committee/Collaboration/Liaison Representative – Fosters collaborative relationships with and serves as liaison to academic and student affairs departments and units, faculty, staff, and former students. Serves on university‐wide, division, department and other committees and working groups.
  • Engagement Team – Coordinates efforts to contribute to student academic success, professional and personal development, and student engagement as part of a team.
  • Contribute to the Profession – Attends and presents at local, regional, and national conferences and formally contributes to professional associations to enhance the departments and Division of Student Affairs influence in the profession.
  • Assessment – Assesses programs for learning, effectiveness, and future development. Monitors the budget and expenditures for programs, services, and student organizations.
  • Budgeting/DevelopmentMonitors the budget and expenditures for programs, services, and student organizations. Performs other duties as assigned.
