Scholarships and Student Aid

McGill’s Scholarship and Student Aid Office (SSAO) advises McGill students on funding options, budgeting, and debt management. They disburse all provincial, federal, and US student aid funding, and help with government aid information and documentation. They offer an Entrance Bursary Program, Entrance Scholarships, an In-Course Financial Aid Program (loans and bursaries) and a Work Study Program based on financial need.

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Associate Director, plans, develops and implements procedures, policies and processes to support the streamlined delivery and administration of the University’s student award programs, counseling and advising students on financial assistance programs including government and institutional aid programs.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Conducts interviews with undergraduate and graduate students, assesses financial need and determines level of assistance and appropriate award type to be provided through University funds (loan, bursary, work study, etc.).
• Performs need assessments for newly accepted students, i.e., Entrance Financial Aid applicants. Proposes level of award and prepares files for second reader, i.e., Student Aid Officer
• Assists students by acting as resource person for the various Government Aid and Institutional Aid Programs available at McGill (i.e., Entrance and In-course Financial Aid, Work Study, Mobility Awards, Tuition Fee Deferrals, scholarships, etc.). Provides guidance to students on preparation of application and supporting documentation. Provides advice and assistance to students, parents, faculties and academic advisors.
• Reviews student applications for loan extensions, mobility financial aid supplement, fee deferrals and other programs that require online adjudication.
• Engages in process improvements to streamline government aid processes for all stakeholders including students, Front Line Team and Financial Aid Counselors.  On-boards and mentors Front Line Team in government/McGill aid and related policy interpretation and decision-making.
• Promotes and streamlines website and communication content to remove student awareness barriers to programs and services; represents unit on Student Services Communication Committee.
• In close collaboration with financial aid specialists, ensures training documentation – including relevant policies, procedures and reference materials – are up to date and communicated to team. Maintains procedures manual.  Reviews and makes recommendations on exceptional cases and appeals.
• Acts as resource person on various student aid programs available with campus partners to ensure streamlined and priority referrals. Keeps abreast of developments in all student financial assistance programs. . Responds to inquiries and provides advice and guidance to students, parents, faculties, academic advisors and other services/units.
• Implements awareness, prevention and other student outreach activities.
• Represent unit on internal  committees and recruitment/orientation events, i.e., Discover McGill, Open House, Campus Connect, etc.

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities:

• Knowledge of student financial aid programs.
• Experience advising students one-on-one.
• Public relations experience, an asset.
• Must be detail-oriented to manage and update constant changes of information.
• High degree of flexibility in managing multiple files simultaneously, with the ability to prioritize and meet strict deadlines.
• High level of interpersonal, organizational, presentation and interviewing skills.
• Client-focused and service oriented, with an ability to effectively communicate with internal and external contacts.
• Able to work autonomously and as part of a team.
• Proven ability to deal with confidential information with discretion.
• Must have demonstrated experience and ease with new technological applications.
• Computer literate with all Microsoft Office tools, MINERVA, Banner SIS and BSA.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills:
• English, written and spoken.
• French, written, spoken.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree 1 Year Related Experience with Bachelor’s Degree / DEC III 3 Years Related Experience with DEC III

Annual Salary:

(MPEX Grade 03) $52,210.00 – $65,260.00 – $78,310.00
