Strathmartine Trust Scholarship in Early Modern Scottish History at the University of Dundee

University of Dundee

With the Strathmartine Trust, the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law at the University of Dundee is funding doctoral research that advances the University’s strategic priorities of the field of Scottish History.

We invite applicants for a funded doctoral scholarship in Early Modern Scottish History at the University of Dundee. The funding covers the cost of tuition and provides a stipend for 36 months.*

The scholarship is open to any applicant working on early modern Scotland, broadly defined, and in the School’s strategic priority areas of climate impacts and transitions, justice and power, or childhood and youth. Projects engaging with questions of participation, social diversity and inclusion, or social control are especially welcome, as are proposals centred on Dundee and its environs. It is expected that the successful applicant will work with a wide range of archival sources, including locally-held collections at Dundee University Archives and Dundee City Archives, and applicants should be prepared to discuss the types of material they envisage using. As part of the research, the studentship holder will have the opportunity to liaise with the one of the University’s key partners, The Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee , a body with roots stretching back the fifteenth century, and a central part of the research is expected to be examination (and, ideally, digitisation) of the Trades’ ‘lockit books’. Within these parameters, the studentship holder will be free to develop the research according to their own interests and priorities.

Start date: The Scholarships begin in January 2024.
