The Wildlife Technician – Advanced will work under the direction of the Field Ecologist and SNA Crew Lead. This position will help plan, coordinate, and perform a broad range of native community management and restoration activities, including, but not limited to: forest management and conversion, invasive plants and brush control, and some heavy equipment operation. This position requires an ability to travel throughout assigned work area and work irregular hours, including occasional evenings week-ends, and occasional work away from home work area for up to 5 days (1-2 times/year). The selected candidate must be able to drive a state vehicle. Candidates with three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years, or who have an OWI/DUI violation within the past year are barred from driving state vehicles.
60% – Under the direction of the field ecologist and crew lead, conduct habitat management and invasive species control activities on state-managed lands, including but not limited to the use of herbicides and various pieces of equipment (chainsaws, brush cutters).
20% – Complete property management reports and create GIS maps, and enter accomplishments into department land management systems.
10% – Conduct various non-game wildlife surveys such as rare plants, invertebrates, and reptiles within the assigned working area. Assist field ecologist with the development share crop agreements.
10% – Assist on other Natural Heritage Conservation field projects as assigned.
Position 2, Conservation Biologist:
The Conservation Biologist will work under the direction of the District Ecologist and SNA Crew Lead. This position will help plan, schedule, and conduct work (independently or with a crew) on all aspects of on-going field projects related to property management and stewardship of state lands. These projects include, but are not limited to: vegetation surveys, natural community restoration, habitat assessments and inventories for rare and listed flora and fauna, and infrastructure maintenance (e.g., signage, fencing). This position requires an ability to travel throughout assigned work area and work irregular hours, including occasional evenings week-ends, and occasional work away from home work area for up to 5 days (1-2 times/year). The selected candidate must be able to drive a state vehicle. Candidates with three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years, or who have an OWI/DUI violation within the past year are barred from driving state vehicles.
35% – Conduct inventory and restore natural communities on State Natural Areas
20% – Conduct property inspections and other property maintenance work
15% – Complete other Natural Heritage Conservation program duties as assigned
10% – Track and evaluate ongoing management and complete internal reports (e.g., pesticide use reports, vehicle use reports, crew daily log)
10% – Lead volunteers and interns in habitat improvement and invasive species control projects
5% – Complete habitat assessment for rare and listed species found on State Natural Areas and submit reports to the Natural Heritage Inventory
5% – Lead field trips and provide presentations to groups or the general public
Job Details
This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position. LTE positions do not automatically lead to permanent state employment or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employees; however, these positions do offer valuable work experience and an opportunity to learn more about career opportunities with the Department of Natural Resources and the State of Wisconsin.
LTE employees are limited to working 1039 hours per position within a twelve-month period.

Preferred:
– Possess a bachelor’s degree in botany, wildlife ecology, biology, or related natural resources field
– Experience in the restoration of Wisconsin remnant plant communities and associated certifications (e.g., chainsaw, pesticide/herbicide use, ATV/UTV, tractor, etc)
– Experience operating heavy equipment
– Able to communicate effectively with project supervisors, co-workers, contractors, internal and external partners, and the public
– Certified as a FFT2 level – completed courses: S130/190, L180, I100 and I700
