Job Summary

The Rutishauser Lab (https://experimentalmedicine.ucsf.edu/laboratories/rutishauser-lab ) in the Department of Medicine, Division of Experimental Medicine at UCSF based at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital seeks a highly motivated SRA 3 to work as a part-time (85%) research technician and part-time (10%) laboratory manager (for a lab of 5-7 people). The laboratory focuses on understanding the mechanisms that promote the formation of protective immunity to viral pathogens across different stages of human development. The candidate will work on several highly collaborative projects that seek to (1) identify the cell-intrinsic (i.e., transcriptional and epigenetic) and cell-extrinsic (i.e., inflammatory cytokine and tissue environment) regulators of T cell exhaustion in chronic HIV infection, (2) determine whether HIV-specific CD8+ T cell exhaustion can be overcome by immune-based interventions (e.g., therapeutic vaccination), and (3) determine the molecular basis of altered CD8+ T cell effector differentiation in early human life and the consequences for the formation of protective immunity in infants. The successful candidate will ideally show proficiency with various laboratory techniques and computer programs, including experience with and/or interest in developing skills in cellular immunology assays (flow and mass cytometry) and analysis (including basic programming using R). Our laboratory strongly values mentorship and support of technicians in developing independence with experimental design, execution, analysis, and presentation, as well as career development. The lab is based in a research Division devoted to studying the pathogenesis and immunology of human chronic infectious diseases (HIV, TB, malaria).

We’re about creating exceptional experience for our employees. Our goal is to provide opportunities for our diverse employee population to develop and grow careers in a team-oriented environment focused on research.
Every employee, at every level, begins their career at UCSF learning about the history of the organization and its established culture built on trust and integrity. Our employees drive this culture, and we want you to be a part of it.

Note: This position requires physical/health screening.

Department Description

The Division of Experimental Medicine is a translational, wet lab research unit comprised of 8 immunological research groups consisting of 10 faculty members and 65+ staff, trainees, and post-docs. Our labs use cutting edge technologies to answer clinically important questions about host-pathogen interactions across globally devastating infectious diseases, including HIV, Malaria, SARS-CoV-2, and Tuberculosis.

Our division aspires to be an actively anti-racist group. We welcome applicants who will contribute to our institution-wide efforts celebrating our cultural backgrounds and be resolute in advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism activities.
