Job Summary

The Piao lab at the Weill Institute for Neuroscience University of California San Francisco is seeking to fill a position as a Staff Research Associate I. We are seeking highly motivated, independent, and organized individuals for a full-time research position. The appropriate candidate will be assisting in research to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying brain development and diseases. The work will be at the University of California San Francisco Parnassus campus briefly before moving to the new Weill building at the Mission Bay campus.

The principal duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Participate in ongoing studies of mouse models – The candidate must be comfortable working with laboratory animals and dissecting procedures, after training.  In addition to work with postdoctoral fellows in various histology studies, the candidate will participate in the maintenance of transgenic mouse colonies; perform ear-tagging and tail-clipping, PCR-based genotyping.
  • Conducting independent research under the guidance of postdoc fellows and PIThe candidate is encouraged to pursue his/her independent research project(s) within the general scope of glial-glial and glial-neuronal interactions in brain development and diseases.
  • Write and edit manuscripts The candidate will have amble opportunities in co-authoring original research articles, review papers, book chapters, as well as editing manuscripts and grant applications.
  • Performs administrative tasksThe candidate will share the administrative tasks with other SRA in the lab, which include ordering, maintenance of lab equipment, and write and manage lab protocols.

    Required Qualifications

    •       BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
    •       Willingness to collect and process human biological samples
    •       Knowledge of scientific equipment (centrifuge, pipettes, ultra-low freezers)
    •       Good Laboratory Practices training
    •       Strong computer skills including the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
    •       Ability to multi-task and prioritize
    •       Excellent communication skills
    •       Flexible schedule – ability to work evenings and weekends
    •       Meticulous record keeping abilities

    Preferred Qualifications

    •       Experience working with human biological samples
    •       Basic knowledge of coding language such as R
    •       Experience with immunohistochemistry, cell culture (organoid culture specifically would be useful), and/or flow cytometry.
