Staff Psychotherapist: Art Therapy and Eating Disorders

The University of Virginia’s Department of Student Health and Wellness, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is seeking to hire a full-time (40-hours per week) mental health professional for the position of Staff Psychotherapist – Art Therapy and Eating Disorders. This is a newly created position focused on utilizing a brand-new art therapy space at our state-of-the-art Student Health and Wellness Building. The ideal candidate will have experience providing Art Therapy as well as expertise in the treatment of eating and body image concerns. Competitive candidates will also have experience working with young adults and individuals from a diversity of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Job Responsibilities:
- Provides inclusive and integrative mental health services (screenings, intakes, referral assistance and individual and group psychotherapy) to UVA students presenting with a wide range of mental health concerns
- Offers consultation and therapy for students presenting with eating concerns
- Serves as a member of the Student Health and Wellness Eating Disorder Consultation and Treatment Team
- Develops and coordinates a CAPS Art Therapy Program and provides art therapy to students in group and individual formats
- Intervenes in crisis and emergency situations of a mental health nature with students, including providing some after hours on-call
- Consults with faculty, staff, students, families, and other professionals regarding the mental health needs of students
- Develops and delivers outreach programming to various groups within the university community
- May provide clinical supervision and training to psychology interns and other trainees.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Licensed as a mental health professional in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or license-eligible; must be licensed within 6 months of hire)
- Master’s degree in Counseling or Social Work or PhD/PsyD in Clinical or Counseling Psychology
- A minimum of 3 years of experience providing individual psychotherapy to adolescents or adults and a minimum of 1 year of experience with risk assessment and crisis intervention
- Expertise in art therapy and motivation and ability to build an art therapy program that includes group-based interventions
- Expertise in eating disorders and body image concerns
- Knowledge and competency in culturally informed therapeutic approaches
- Experience with brief models of psychotherapy
- Crisis management skills, including experience with risk assessment, safety planning and facilitating transfers of care to inpatient facilities
- Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team (collaborating with medical and mental health professionals)
Preferred Experience
- Certification in the treatment of eating disorders, disordered eating, exercise, or body image concerns
- Certification as an art therapist
- Experience working on a college or university campus
- Experience leading psychotherapy groups
- Experience providing outreach and speaking to diverse audiences
- Experience supervising therapists-in-training
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
