Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Your Responsibilities
What you’ll do
- Assessing patients’ visual acuity and using knowledge and skills developed to determine next stage of the patients’ journey
- Support the unregistered Nurses with medicines management, observing and guiding the instillation of eye drops as per SOP
- Preparing patients for invasive procedures including cannulation
- Administration of intra-venous drugs
- Venesection
- Leading and guiding small teams/co-ordinating the department with support from Nurse in charge
- Carrying out specialised Ophthalmic skills such as removal of contact lens, insertion of punctual plugs
What we’re looking for
We are looking for highly motivated, trustworthy, professional & reliable band 5 Nurses with an interest in Ophthalmology. Previous Ophthalmic experience is not an essential requirement; however, a devotion to develop & learn is paramount. There will be specific in-house training to develop specialised Ophthalmic knowledge & skills. The department is continually changing, and this will require the applicant to be flexible and forward thinking. We are looking for highly motivated, trustworthy, professional & reliable band 5 Nurses with an interest in Ophthalmology.
All applicants would need to be committed to teaching & getting involved in education and development of others, as well as themselves. Protected time will be given to develop specialised clinical Ophthalmic skills; these are supported through completion of written competencies. There is a need to do some of this written work during own time in order to achieve essential competencies to progress into the role.
The department actively supports student nurses; a qualified mentor would be desirable but not essential
Eye OPD would be particularly attractive to those wanting to develop their leadership skills, there are opportunities to lead small teams and build skills towards organising larger teams.
All applicants would need to be flexible, empathetic, passionate and work well within a team and independently.
