Sr. Scientific Engineering Associate – Quantum SPLEEM

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Molecular Foundry Division has an opening for a Sr. Scientific Engineering Associate for Low Energy Electron Microscopy to join the team. In this exciting role, you will provide multifunctional technical expertise and analysis in imaging and characterization of nanoscale and nanofabricated materials and systems for Foundry projects primarily utilizing the Spin-polarized Low-Energy Electron Microscopy (SPLEEM) instrument suite.

The Molecular Foundry at Berkeley Labs is one of five Department of Energy (DOE) Nanoscale Science Research Centers (NSRCs), national user facilities for interdisciplinary research at the nanoscale, supported by the DOE Office of Science. Together the NSRCs comprise a suite of complementary facilities that provide researchers with state-of-the-art capabilities to fabricate, process, characterize and model nanoscale materials, and constitute the largest infrastructure investment of the National Nanotechnology Initiative.

What You Will Do:

  • Maintain stewardship of the Spin-polarized Low-Energy Electron Microscopy (SPLEEM) user program in the Molecular Foundry, working in a hands-on fashion with users and foundry scientific staff in making advanced measurements
  • Use independent judgment to develop new LEEM measurement and analysis modalities in effective ways exploiting electron-solid interactions
  • Train researchers/users in the scientific principles and applications of LEEM/SPLEEM microscopy
  • Discuss the SPLEEM program with prospective users
  • Apply Integrated Safety Management principles to develop safe operating procedures, and provide on-the-job training to users
  • Expand the capabilities of the SPLEEM facility by designing/engineering novel hardware and software solutions
  • Continue commissioning of the Foundry’s new QSPLEEM instrument, including optimization of spin-polarized electron imaging and spectroscopy, installation/testing of the foundry-designed cryogenic cooling stage, analyzing the performance of commercial and lab-built SPLEEM instrumentation, developing performance tests and calibration routines, and performing benchmark measurements.
  • Oversee instrument repairs covered under service contract by Elmitec, the SPLEEM vendor, and repair or resolve technical problems

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in experimental Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or Electrical Engineering
  • Knowledge of electron-optics and spectroscopy, including Transmission and Reflection electron microscopy, demonstrated through publications in relevant journals
  • Experience in ultra-high vacuum surface science
  • Experience in scientific data analysis. Specific experience in python programming for data analysis and experimental control.
  • Experience in electron optics and electron solid interactions, demonstrated by publications in refereed scientific journals
  • Skilled in electron Microscopy, specifically a minimum of 1 year experience in SPLEEM
  • Knowledge of advanced scientific Image and spectral data analysis
  • Ability to work in a team and interface with the multicultural community of users and collaborators within the Molecular Foundry

For full consideration, please apply by September 23, 2022.
