Job Summary
Under the supervision of the UCSF Department of Neurosurgery and guided by the policies and procedures, rules and regulations, and bylaws of the UCSF Medical Center, some Nursing Policies, and, Medical Staff Policies, and any unique ambulatory patient services this Physician Assistant (PA) position is assigned to the department of Neurological Surgery to assist providers with assessing and treating but not limited to brain tumors, spinal tumors and deformities and trauma. This AHP position may perform delegated functions as appropriate to their “scope of practice”. In general, the “scope of practice” includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and surgical procedures per approved standardized procedures as identified by the list available on the Medical Staff Office website.
The CIDP approved standardized procedures are unique to each person and are unlikely to include ALL SPs on the list. This position may provide patient care in approved age groups and UCSF Health licensed settings. The AHP has responsibility for the quality of standards of care for a specified patient population and evidences self-direction and accountability in the development of this role within the all UCSF medical center locations. UCSF Health requires all Advanced Health Practitioners (AHP) to be credentialed through its Medical Staff Services Office (MSSO) in order to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric AHPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Health sites (Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Satellite Clinics, et al). Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 30-60 days and must be completed prior to the first working day.

Candidate Eligibility for Sign-on Bonus
Candidate cannot be a current UC employee. Candidate cannot have been employed by the University during the 12 months prior to the proposed rehire date. Candidate position classification cannot be Senior Management Group (SMG). Proposed candidate total case compensation offer must be below the Indexed Compensation Level (ICL) of $340,000 as of (9/1/2021). Candidate must meet any additional UC location eligibility requirements.

Department Description
The Department of Neurosurgery is a highly active clinical and research department within the School of Medicine (SOM). The Department has 65 full-time faculty working as clinicians and/or basic research scientists, 10 recall faculty, 20 volunteer faculty, 29 non-faculty academics, 44 postdoctoral scholars, 21 residents, 6 clinical fellows, 7 graduate students and approximately 185 administrative, clinic and research staff. The department conducts its clinical, teaching, and research activities at four UCSF campuses: Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Veteran’s Administration (VA) Medical Center, San Francisco General Hospital and the Helen Diller Cancer Building at Mission Bay. Faculty and staff are located at the Parnassus and Mission Bay Campuses as well as San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) and the VA.
Required Qualifications
- Incumbents for positions included in the Physician Assistant series are expected to meet the legal requirements to practice as a Physician Assistant as determined by graduation from a training program approved by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California; to be certified by the State Board of Medical Examiners or the National Board of Medical Examiners; and possess the skills, knowledges, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
- Must have completed an APA recognized graduate master’s degree program as a Physician Assistant.
- Demonstrated competence in the following areas: Clinical practice, communication, clinical case management, leadership, problem solving and teaching
- Must be able to obtain Medical Staff privileges through the UCSF Medical Staff Office
- Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with others. Ability to work well under pressure and with deadlines
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately and be detail orientated
- Ability to efficiently prepare written summaries of activities, set priorities and complete reports within required timeframes
- Knowledge of medical and/or rehabilitation terminology
- Ability to work with patients and program staff from diverse culture and social class backgrounds
- Able to work as a team member in a culturally diverse setting
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with excellent follow through
- Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability and able to work independently without close supervision
- Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations and in varying schedules as outlined
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of practical experience in outpatient and/or inpatient setting, preferably spine/pain management
License/Certification
- Must hold current National Board of Medical Examiners certification or the State Board of Medical Examiners certification.
- Must hold current AHA BLS or ACLS or PALs certification as required in the clinical service but BLS is minimum required.
- Must hold a current and active PA license in California.
- Must hold an active and transferable DEA license to California as required for clinical area and it is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment online.
- Will need at least 5 years of experience as a PA.
UCSF Health requires all Advanced Health Practitioners (APP) to be credentialed through OMAG to practice and be privileged through CIDP to function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Health sites and affiliates. Credentialing, health plan enrollment, and approval of privileges must be completed prior to the first working day. Inability to comply with the requirements of OMAG/CIDP AT ALL TIMES will result in either, a LOA or suspension of privileges designation.
