Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director, Student Application Systems Architecture; the Sr. Application Systems Developer is a key part of a team that is responsible for the architecture, development and maintenance of Columbia University’s Student Information Systems. In this capacity, the developer will perform the analysis, design, development, implementation and delivery of application enhancements, extracts, and reports.  This position plays a key role as partner to the subject matter experts and functional owners within the Student Administration area. The incumbent should have prior experience with full software development life cycle and the ability to work with the functional owners to identify change requirements and specification write-ups.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts impact analysis, application development and unit testing to ensure the quality of the system’s current design and development standards is enhanced.
  • Works on multiple tasks at the same time, must possess the ability to work with changing priorities and in a deadline driven environment.
  • Demonstrates excellence in a variety of competencies including: project/task definition and management, teamwork, analytical thinking, and client/customer awareness.
  • Develops, reviews and validates test plans. Executes test scripts.
  • Provides support for the production day and night batch processes.
  • Provides support and responses to questions from the Registrar and Student Financial Services.
  • Diagrams business processes and system workflows and develops comprehensive documents for applications and sub-systems.
  • Weekend and off-hour work may be necessary on occasion.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or its equivalent required.
  • Minimum 4-6 years’ related experience.
  • Operating Systems are MVS, MS‑DOS, MS Windows, Unix, Linux.
  • Required Knowledge  of COBOL, COBOL II, JCL, SQL, IBM Utilities, XPEDITOR, FILE-AID, VSAM, CICS, DB2, TSO/ISPF, FILE-AID, Data Warehouse.
  • Strong working experience with full applications systems development lifecycle.
  • Strong development skills with multiple mainframe applications/tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in a variety of competencies including teamwork/collaboration, analytical thinking, communication and influencing skills, and technical expertise.
  • Ability to work with changing priorities and with multiple projects.
  • Ability to be precise and attentive to detail is essential.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Weekend and off-hour work may be necessary on occasion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in conversion from mainframe environment to ERP solution.
  • Working knowledge of FOCUS and PIPE are a plus.
