Job Summary:

Purpose of the Center for Academic Achievement:

The purpose of the Center for Academic Achievement is to provide academic support to students from the School of Medicine, Graduate School of Nursing, and the Graduate School of Biological Sciences. The Center supports students individually, including one-on-one remediation, as well as by developing materials and structures supporting the curriculum, learning environment, and the faculty.

Essential Functions

  • Provide one-on-one academic enrichment support for students with academic challenges and/or ADA accommodations tailored toward their individual needs.
  • Develop or implement advanced individualized study plans based on interviews, test reviews, and documentation from other service providers
  • Provide individual assistance to students preparing for standardized certification and course exams, addressing study skills, organization, time management, study planning, and test taking.
  • Identify students with mental health needs and refer to, or communicate with, other support personnel when appropriate
  • Provide academic enrichment support for UMass Chan programs designed to enhance learner recruitment and retention, particularly for those individuals and groups at risk for academic difficulty including non-traditional learners and those from underrepresented groups in medicine
  • Follow-up with students to ensure appropriate case management.
  • Develop and disseminate materials, resources and curricular content, including online offerings, to enhance academic enrichment access and support for learners and faculty.
  • Actively participate on teams representing the department as assigned.
  • Track and report program outcomes and quality measures.
  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Education/Psychology, or equivalent experience
  • 3 years of relevant job experience.
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communications skills.
    • Comfort querying students about sensitive issues
    • Familiarity with interviewing students to arrive at appropriate individualized interventions
  • Ability to utilize and identify resources to gain familiarity with curriculum, as well as to design intervention programs
  • Written communication skills required include:
    • Effectively write case notes
    • Clearly document intervention recommendations
    • Write up case progress summaries for others involved in student support
    • Using email to efficiently to arrange meetings, provide case follow-up, and share information as needed with others
    • Seeking input to further develop skills and assist students
  • Coaching skills to facilitate student ability to implement their learning plans.
  • Familiarity with ethics related to FERPA, confidentiality, and other laws governing communication in an educational setting
  • Familiarity with Outlook (scheduling and email), Excel, Word, Power Point, and other computer programs used in service to students
  • Experience developing interventions in an educational setting
  • Knowledge of Blackboard Learn or another similar educational platform

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in Education/Psychology, or equivalent experience
  • Experience working with graduate level learners
