Part-time Teacher Education Supervisor with a focus on Special Education student teaching placements

The Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leading in the School of Education is looking to hire multiple part-time student teaching supervisors. Supervisors will work directly with student teachers and mentor teachers, visit classrooms and conduct teaching observations, and collaborate with other Pitt teacher education faculty. Highly qualified candidates will have: 1) prior experience teaching Special Education, and 2) prior or current state certification in Special Education.

The position reports to the appropriate teacher education program coordinator (Dr. Anna Arlotta-Guerrero). Hiring is on a yearly basis dependent on School and program needs. Professional responsibilities of a part-time student teaching supervisor include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct the required number of student teaching observations
  • Provide observation feedback in writing and in a post-observation conversation
  • Ensure students’ compliance with due dates for certification documentation
  • Submit the grade to the program coordinator
  • Write letters of recommendation for students
  • Attend supervisor training and program-specific faculty meetings
  • Communicate with students to schedule visits in advance
  • Respond to student teacher/intern emails within 24 hours during the workweek
  • Promote productive problem-solving communication when students discuss concerns or issues. Participate in problem-solving and student improvement plans, as needed
  • Document any concerns about student or placement
  • Track students’ attendance and report any excessive absences to the program coordinator
  • Provide feedback focused on performance and growth
  • Initiate an initial conference with the Mentor Teacher and student to set expectations for the experience
  • Facilitate communication between Mentor and student about roles and responsibilities
  • Provide ongoing, open, and supportive communication focused on student-teacher growth at a minimum once per visit
  • Demonstrate respect for Mentor Teacher schedules
  • Share any questions/concerns with the Program Coordinator

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Special Education related field
  • Indication of knowledge of the teaching and learning process
  • Demonstrated expertise in the area of education or related field
  • Currently holds or has held a teaching certificate in the content area(s) where supervision is occurring
  • Three years of teaching experience (minimum) in the content area(s) where supervision is occurring
  • The pay for student teaching supervision is dependent upon the number of student teachers who are supervised and the program in which the supervision occurs
