The Campus Kitchen is the University of Southampton’s in house catering service. We facilitate a multitude of services across the University to include the provision of food in catered halls, retail catering outlets across all campuses and a delivered catering service for all hospitality requirements. Our aim is to deliver a five-star food service, catering for a wide range of needs and requirements and enhancing the experience for staff, students and visitors on campus.

The role

As part of a passionate Catering team the Sous Chef will be responsible for the production of exceptional food, running a kitchen in a number of locations across the University Campus including but not limited to: student halls of residence, Highfield campus food outlets, Avenue Campus our fine dining restaurant and the occasional special events and functions both on and off-site.

The hours of work are five days out of seven on a flexible rota basis, 36 hours per week. 

Retail areas work 7am -3pm with the opportunity to work overtime during Events 7am- 9pm. this will involve a variety of different styles of cooking from fresh food on the counter, a brasserie menu cooked to order and hospitality events to include buffets and fine dining. 

In our halls of residence we work a shift pattern of Monday to Saturday 6.30am – 12.30pm and 11am -7pm where the food is freshly cooked and served “counter style” for up to 300 students.

About You

  • You will bring Experience in large scale catering and good knowledge of fine dining food
  • A passion for food and resilience to work in a fast-paced busy environment
  • Ability to work as part of a large team
  • Ability to apply a basic knowledge of established practice and procedures and display an awareness of customer needs.
  • Ability to use own initiative to organise your daily work activities.
  • Maintain a positive outlook and show flexibility to new ideas and approaches, consistently achieving service standards.
