Job Description

Through consistent and regular visits to Veterinary Medical Center reception and clinical areas will proactively seek to identify situations that place clientele at risk for significant emotional distress. Provide support, crisis intervention, grief education, referrals and resources/to animal owners; Work as a member of the veterinary health care team to support difficult decision-making, end-of-life care, euthanasia planning, and the grieving process. Maintain current case records/notes; develop and maintain pet loss and bereavement informational web site; revise existing and develop new educational materials for use with varied audiences. Participate when invited in classroom teaching in the core/elective curriculum (e.g., Professional Development, Communication Skills); conduct in-the-moment clinical teaching with senior veterinary students, house staff, hospital staff, and faculty during case management activities; conduct workshops, small-group learning, and clinical rounds on effective client support and communication skills; coordinate and deliver orientation training for senior veterinary students, interns & residents, new staff and faculty. Participate on committees as needed; Coordinates the annual remembrance ceremony; Assist with other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education Required
Master’s Level Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in human mental health field (e.g., family therapy, social work, or clinical psychology) and a State of Ohio Social Work License or license eligible required. Training and experience in loss and grief theory and practice as well as an understanding of the human-companion animal bond; 3 years experience in general clinical counseling specifically providing support for grief death and dying preferred; desire to work in settings providing crisis intervention; teaching experience in informal or formal setting; appreciation for the impact of pet death on families and clinical professionals; desire to work as a collaborative and supportive team member in a veterinary clinical setting; Exposure to animal inflicted injury or illness and animal dander and zoonotic diseases.
