Organizational Unit Overview It is the mission of the Department of Pediatrics, East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, to provide exemplary medical education/training of physicians in pediatric medicine at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, it is the mission of the department to provide model comprehensive primary and consultative subspecialty care to children of eastern North Carolina, to advance scientific knowledge through basic and clinical research, and to provide continuing medical education opportunities for physicians in the region.
Job Duties The Department of Pediatrics at the Brody School of Medicine at ECU is seeking a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) to provide therapeutic counseling to a diverse pediatric patient population and their family members.
The employee will conduct initial intake sessions and assessments with patients/families referred by healthcare providers and to act as a liaison between the patient, community advocacy programs, family members, and other providers. Key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following: a basic knowledge of pediatric diagnoses and their effects on the psycho-social status of children, assessment of patients’ socioeconomic environment, identification of psycho/social and economic needs, identification of resources to meet the needs of the patient, and facilitation of the processes to match available resources with the patient’s needs, handle crisis situations, and work in a multidisciplinary team approach. This position sees patients at the Pediatric Specialty Care Clinics.
Minimum Education/Experience Bachelor’s degree in a Human Services discipline with coursework related to the area of assignment. Some positions may require certification to practice as a certified or licensed Clinical Social Worker as required by the North Carolina Social Work Certification Board. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification required by statute or regulation Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education The preferred candidate will have a four-year college degree in Social Work or a related human services field or a master’s degree in Social Work, as well as 3-4 years of experience in medical social work, case management, home health, DSS, or hospital discharge planning. A working knowledge of pediatric diagnoses and child development is desirable. Candidates should possess excellent communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills. It is essential that candidates be able to interact effectively with a diverse customer population and be self-directed in their approach to problem-solving. Experience working with patients in a medical setting and extensive knowledge of community resources are desirable.
