Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Counseling & Administrative Manager, the Social Work Associate, located in the Women’s Options Center (WOC) at ZSFG, plays a key role in the success of the clinic.  The WOC is an abortion clinic providing first- and second-trimester abortion care.  The Social Work Associate (SWA) is the first contact for patients seeking abortion, and as such is an ambassador for our culture of non-stigmatizing, patient-centered care.  It is imperative that the SWA possess a non-judgmental, compassionate approach to abortion care and have comfort with and confidence in serving a patient population with complex medical and psychosocial issues. The SWA is responsible for adhering to HIPAA laws and San Francisco Health Network and UCSF patient confidentiality requirements.

The SWA in this position is responsible for counseling and making appointments by phone and in person, completing registration, and verifying insurance. This position requires the ability to engage in and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously:  operating a busy, multi-line phone system, answering the door and checking patients in, and responding to physician and staff requests. On the phone and in person, the SWA coaches patients in how to obtain Medi-Cal in their county of residence and works closely with the Eligibility Worker to determine eligibility when patients have managed-care Medi-Cal plans based outside of San Francisco or commercial insurances. In that role, the SWA is the liaison to the Counseling & Administrative Manager and clinical staff regarding patients’ complex medical and psychosocial needs, and alerts key staff members when there might be a delay in service so that special arrangements can be made to expedite an appointment.  The SWA also serves as a concierge to link patients from out of town or patients with limited resources with organizations that can assist them in securing lodging, transportation and gas money. 

The SWA provides pre-abortion decision assessment and counseling on the phone and in the clinic, patient advocacy during the abortion, cleaning of equipment and instruments, stocking of supplies, and health education in the recovery room.  This position plays an integral role in maintaining clinic and patient flow through clear and direct communication with all team members, accurate and detailed documentation, patient and chart coordination, setting up and breaking down exam rooms, and procuring medical supplies and equipment. The SWA works with physicians, nurses, and medical and nursing students to provide medically excellent, compassionate, and culturally sensitive care. Pre-abortion decision assessment and counseling includes information about the procedure and its risks, aftercare instructions, contraceptive health education, decision assessment, and screening for psychosocial issues. Decision counseling is provided for patients who are experiencing decision conflict and/or ambivalence.

Social Work Associates supplement the work of Clinical Social Workers by providing material supportive services which assist patients/clients and their families to achieve maximum functioning; and perform other related duties as required.  Under supervision, incumbents provide material services for patients/clients who have been prescreened or who are being seen concurrently by a Clinical Social Worker.  Assigned tasks are facilitative in nature and supplementary to clinical activities. Incumbents provide such tangible services as assisting in the process of applying for Medi-Cal, arranging temporary housing, assisting in the filing for benefits or welfare assistance, arranging for medical appliances, scheduling patient/client personal activities in accord with medical/psychiatric problems and prescribed care; provide a supportive relationship to clients/patients; and participate in interdisciplinary treatment teams.

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, & Reproductive Sciences (ObGyn & RS) is a major academic Department in the School of Medicine (SOM) committed to providing quality health care services; educating health care providers and investigators; and conducting research to advance knowledge in our field. The Department is nationally recognized for research and training in women’s health care specialties. This position is based at the Department’s Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) Division where the Department has a large teaching, research, and clinical site. Required Qualifications

•    Bachelor’s degree in social work from a program approved by the Council on Social Work Education or a bachelor’s degree in a related field and one year experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
•    Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
•    Compassionate, non-judgmental attitude
•    Ability to provide support to patients experiencing complex emotions
•    Ability to work with a culturally and socio-economically diverse population
•    Ability to work in a medical/surgical environment
•    Desire to work in an abortion care setting
•    Enthusiastic and supportive approach toward medical and nursing students
•    Ability to use electronic medical record software
•    Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and work independently in a high-pressure environment
•    Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability
•    Employs good judgment as to when to consult a supervisor for help

Preferred Qualifications

•    Demonstrated experience providing trauma-informed care and/or working for reproductive justice
•    Bilingual in English and Spanish, Cantonese, or Mandarin
•    Counseling skills in the area of family planning, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, substance use, or STI/HIV prevention.
