Overview:

IBTCI is seeking a qualified Social Cohesion and Conflict Prevention Expert for the anticipated USAID/Guinea Economic Resilience Assessment for Conflict Prevention and Stability Promotion in Guinea. The selected candidate will contribute to a comprehensive assessment focusing on economic factors influencing social unrest, ethnic tensions, and radicalization. This assessment will target the Kankan and N’Zerekore regions, identifying drivers of instability and proposing interventions that promote social cohesion and prevent violent extremism. The ideal candidate should possess experience in analyzing social unrest and conflict prevention through an economic lens.

This engagement spans three months, commencing in October 2024 and concluding in January 2025, and is contingent upon receiving the USAID award.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties/Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct an in-depth analysis of the economic drivers of social unrest, ethnic tensions, radicalization, and violent extremism in the Kankan and N’Zerekore regions of Guinea.
  • Identify key risk factors and vulnerabilities related to economic instability that may contribute to conflict or radicalization among youth, women, and marginalized groups.
  • Engage with diverse stakeholders, including local communities, government agencies, civil society organizations, and vulnerable populations, to gather insights on the link between economic opportunities and social cohesion.
  • Analyze how existing social, political, and economic structures impact the risk of violent extremism and conflict in the targeted regions.
  • Research and document successful approaches and interventions from other countries or regions that have addressed similar issues through economic empowerment and conflict prevention.
  • Contribute to data collection, field research, and stakeholder consultations, ensuring a participatory and conflict-sensitive approach to the assessment.
  • Perform secondary data analysis and synthesize existing data and evidence.
  • Research and document successful economic empowerment approaches from other regions and countries for comparative analysis.
  • Collaborate closely with the Team Leader and other subject matter experts to integrate findings into the final assessment report.
  • Provide technical expertise on strategies to strengthen social cohesion, prevent violent extremism, and address conflict drivers through economic interventions.
  • Engage in meetings with relevant USAID staff to discuss the assignment and present findings, providing regular updates on the assessment’s progress.
  • Ensure all tasks are executed to the highest professional standards, meeting both USAID and IBTCI requirements.
  • Guarantee the delivery of high-quality deliverables within set deadlines.
  • Maintain effective communication with the assessment team and relevant stakeholders.
  • Ensure conflict sensitivity principles and research ethics are integrated into all stages of the assessment.
  • Ensure compliance with all USAID, IBTCI, and program-specific policies and regulations.
  • Will be required to be in-country to perform the essentials duties of this position.
  • Travel is essential and may include travel to fragile and conflict-affected areas. An average of 25% travel for project implementation and/or project management duties.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • At least 7 years of experience conducting assessments related to social cohesion, conflict prevention, violent extremism, or related fields, with a focus on economic factors.
  • Proven experience working in fragile/conflict environments, particularly in contexts with social unrest or radicalization challenges.
  • Experience working in Guinea or West Africa is preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team and contribute to high-quality deliverables.
  • Ability to travel to Guinea and conduct necessary field visits.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and French.

Education: A degree in Conflict Studies, Sociology, International Development, Political Science, Economics, or a related field.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of social cohesion, conflict prevention, violent extremism, and how economic factors contribute to these issues.
  • Expertise in conducting assessments related to social unrest, ethnic tensions, and radicalization from an economic perspective.
  • Familiarity with conflict-sensitive approaches and research methodologies.
  • Proven ability to conduct field research, stakeholder consultations, and data analysis.
  • Familiarity with the economic, social, and political context of Guinea.
  • Experience with USAID-funded projects and assessments is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and report-writing skills.

Working Environment: Work is typically performed in an office environment.

Physical Requirements: This is largely a sedentary position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, and lift small objects up to 20 lbs.

Supervisory Responsibility: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Travel: This position requires travel to Guinea for field research.
