Course description:

This workshop-based course teaches students about the creative writing process and the fundamentals of writing fiction specifically. Through readings of fiction in various genres, discussions, creative writing prompts and longer assignments, students learn how storytellers work with setting, character, scenes, structure, point-of-view, style and other elements. Students will learn how to take creative risks and grow through writing fiction, how to develop solid work from shaky drafts, how to be generous yet shrewd editors of their own and others’ work, and how and why to be active in a writing community.

Class schedule: Lectures: Fridays 10:00-13:00

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1st, 2024 – December 31st, 2024

Salary: 

  • Sessional Lecturer I $9,457.90 (includes 4% vacation pay)
  • Sessional Lecturer I Long Term $9,930.79 (includes 6% vacation pay)
  • Sessional Lecturer II $10,121.77 (includes 6% vacation pay)
  • Sessional Lecturer II Long Term $10,326.62 (includes 6% vacation pay)
  • Sessional Lecturer III $10,362.76 (includes 6% vacation pay)
  • Sessional Lecturer III Long Term $10,570.02 (includes 6% vacation pay)

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications:

  • MA in English literature, rhetoric, creative writing, or related field.
  • A publication history as a writer of fiction.
  • At least 5 years of experience teaching creative writing.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a credit course instructor.
  • At least 2 years of experience marking undergraduate writing; ability to mark carefully including for grammar.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Publication of at least one book of fiction.
  • Demonstrated interest in pedagogy.
  • Familiarity with the range of writing ability of undergraduates.

Description of duties:

The Sessional Lecturer will help create a syllabus for the course and order appropriate textbooks, in consultation with the Director of the Writing and Rhetoric program. The Sessional Lecturer will lecture once per week, grade all assignments, hold office hours each week, see students by appointment, and answer questions through email.
