Course Number and Title: SLA232H1F – Language, Politics, Identity

Description: In this course we will examine the multi-faceted nature of language policy, language standardization, language contact, language maintenance, language conflict and language loss. In addition, we will explore issues such as language rights, languages of education and linguistic identity. While the focus will be on languages in the Slavic, East European, Nordic and Baltic regions, the discourse in this class will also relate to a broad range of language issues globally.

Sessional Dates of Appointment: September 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024

Salary: Sessional Lecturer I $9,457.90

  • Sessional Lecturer I Long Term $9,930.79
  • Sessional Lecturer II $10,121.77
  • Sessional Lecturer II Long Term $10,326.62
  • Sessional Lecturer III $10,362.76
  • Sessional Lecturer III Long Term $10,570.02.

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications: Completed Ph.D. in Slavic Languages & Literatures. Experience teaching online required.

Description of duties: Sessional Lecturer will conduct 4-hrs. tutorial per week, marking, student contact, office hours, meeting with course supervisor, & TA support. Creates written and oral prompts, etc..

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.

Please note: Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the Unit 3 collective agreement, and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.
