PLA 1652 H1F: Introductory Studio in Urban Design and Planning

Course Description: This introductory studio will focus on the phenomenon of density. As a concept, density refers not only to population and built environment, but also to the nature of social relations and the quality of urban life. Accordingly, the general purpose of this studio will be to explore the relationships between density, urban form and urban life. This investigation is organized around the development of urban design guidelines and plans for a typical residential block of central Toronto, with special attention to public space, street life, built form and other key issues of urban design.

Class Schedule: Mondays & Thursdays, 3pm-6pm

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024

Salary: Sessional Lecturer I – $9,457.89. Sessional Lecturer I Long-term – $9,930.79. Sessional Lecturer II – $10,121.76. Sessional Lecturer II Long-term – $10,326.61; Sessional Lecturer III – $10,362.76; Sessional Lecturer III Long-term – $10,570.02

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications: A graduate degree in Urban Design, Planning or a related field is required.

Preferred Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Geography, Planning or a related field is preferred. Previous university level experience as a sole or co-instructor preferred. Completion of a professional development course on teaching preferred. Previous graduate level university teaching strongly preferred.

Brief description of duties: Preparing materials for lectures and class discussions; preparing course syllabi and selecting relevant readings; developing, administering, and marking course assignments, tests and exams; test/exam invigilation and holding regular office hours.
