Description:

This course will introduce students to theoretical and applied concepts in pharmaceutical chemistry, in research, development, and manufacturing contexts. The course is designed with lectures and laboratories covering major areas in pharmaceutical chemistry, which have been carefully scheduled together to link concepts discussed during lectures to practical hands-on activities. The course covers selected topics pertinent to drug development such as acid/base equilibria, buffer preparation, drug solubility, drug polymorphs and salt selection, pKa, and co-solvency. The course also examines characterizing properties of common liquid, semi-solid and solid drug vehicles, such as viscosity, degradation kinetics/stability, diffusivity, tonicity, particle size distribution, and powder flowability. Emphasis is placed on the process of drug manufacture. Laboratory equipment used is commonly found in formulation labs, pharmacies, pharmaceutical research laboratories, and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. A lecture module on ethics and academic integrity will discuss cutting-edge applications of ethics in research, and issues arising when complex scientific solutions are proposed to regulatory bodies and to the public eye.

Estimated TA support: 2 TAs, 123h/TA Appointment (Fall and Winter Semester)

Class schedule: Winter Term, Lecture: Tues 11a-12p, Lab: Thurs 1-5p

Sessional dates of appointment: January 2025 – May 2025

Salary: $4,729 (includes 4% vacation pay). This course will be co-coordinated.

Minimum qualifications

Applicants should at a minimum, possess an MSc or PhD and familiarity with content area.

Expert knowledge on the basic manufacturing processes and operation of equipment involved in drug manufacturing and testing:

• Pharmaceutical Wet Granuation
• Tabletting and Capsuling
• USP Drug Dissolution, Type II (Paddle)
• Powder Sieving for Particle Size Characterization (Vibratory Column)
• Working knowledge of mold preparations (suppositories, lollipops, gummy bears)

Prior experience teaching material covered in PHC340 related to pharmaceutics and drug manufacturing.

Knowledge of the Quercus platform for online course delivery is required and experience in online teaching is an asset.

Mastery may be demonstrated, but not limited to scholarly publications establishing expertise in the area, Teaching or TA experience in course with similar content. Demonstrated knowledge and practice of equity, diversity and inclusion required.

Preferred qualifications

Experience with management and delivery of courses using University of Toronto or similar online systems (e.g., Quercus, Canvas-based technologies, Zoom, etc.) is preferred.

Description of duties:

Teaching 44 in-class lab hours over the period of the winter term (11 labs x 4h/lab) originally taught by D. Dubins).

Teaching 1 in-class lecture hour on the topic of mold preparations, over the period of the winter term (1 lectures x 1h/lecture) originally taught by D. Dubins).

Coordinating lecture schedule, midterm(s), and final exam.

All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a University credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content and assessments; providing a list of relevant reading materials.

Prepare, organize, and delivery of course material, preparation and delivery of assignments; be available to students seeking assistance between classes; evaluate and provide students with feedback on their work.
