Course number and title: Sessional Lecturer – LHA1816H – Sociology of Higher Education

Course description: 

This course applies key sociological theories and concepts to issues in higher education. The course examines both how society affects access to and outcomes of higher education, and conversely, how higher education has played a role in forming modern societies. Topics include: the role that higher education plays in social mobility, social reproduction, and the production of elites; faculty labor, knowledge production and dissemination; and, student campus life and identity formation. The course draws on various sub-fields in Sociology, including Social Stratification, the Sociology of Education, Sociology of Organizations and the Sociology of Knowledge.

Class schedule (Lectures): Thursday 17:15 – 20:15

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024

Pay for half course, vacation pay included:

Sessional Lecturer I: $9,182.42

Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $9,641.55

Sessional Lecturer II: $9,826.96

Sessional Lecturer II Long Term: $10,025.84

Sessional Lecturer III: $10,060.93

Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $10,262.15

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications:

Candidates must hold a doctorate in Higher Education or a related field; have a demonstrated record of scholarship in the field of Higher Education and the subject area of the course;

have practical experience related to the topic of the course; and have successful graduate teaching experience in the subject area of the course and a successful track record of teaching online, preferably using Canvas/Quercus.

Prepare, organize, and lead this graduate half course; be available to students seeking assistance between classes; and evaluate student work and provide students with feedback.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.

Please note: Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the Unit 3 collective agreement, and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.
