Course number and title: Sessional Lecturer – LHA1194H – Cyberliteracy and Adult Education

Course description: 

Drawing from several disciplinary perspectives, this course provides an opportunity to interrogate the relationship of the Internet to adult education. The main objectives of this course are: to engage participants in an examination of the influence of contemporary information and communication technology, including social media and other platform-mediated activity, on key adult education praxis areas such as community development, literacy, employment and services. The course provides participants with a critical framework for analyzing Internet mediated environments; and encourages students to explore Internet resources that may be used in conjunction with traditional community development and adult education practice. The course is conducted using a seminar format where discussion is informed by weekly readings.

Estimated course enrolment: 25 students

Class schedule (Lectures): Tuesday 09:00 – 12:00

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024

Pay for half course, vacation pay included:

Sessional Lecturer I: $9,182.42

Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $9,641.55

Sessional Lecturer II: $9,826.96

Sessional Lecturer II Long Term: $10,025.84

Sessional Lecturer III: $10,060.93

Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $10,262.15

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications:

Candidates must hold a doctorate in Adult Education or a related field; have a demonstrated record of scholarship in the field of Adult Education and the subject area of the course; have practical experience related to the topic of the course; and have successful post-secondary teaching experience in the subject area of the course and a successful track record of teaching online, preferably using Canvas/Quercus.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience teaching graduate-level courses.

Description of duties:

Prepare, organize, and lead this graduate half course; be available to students seeking assistance between classes; and evaluate student work and provide students with feedback.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.

Please note: Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the Unit 3 collective agreement, and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.
