Description:
An overview of the biology of trees and the ecological principles that govern the structure and function of forests. Topics in tree biology will include tree identification, wood anatomy, tree architecture, resource acquisition and allocation, tree growth and mortality. Topics in forest ecology will include resource competition, stand development, species succession, and the cycling of nutrients and energy. This course will include a substantial field and lab component.
Class Schedule:
Lecture: Monday 10:00AM – 12:00PM
Practical: Wednesday 2:00PM – 5:00PM
Sessional dates of appointment: 1 September 2024 – 31 December 2024; please note that this position includes the completion of any course work and grading not completed by 31 December 2024
Estimate of the course enrolment: Approximately 40 students
Salary: Sessional Lecturer I – $9,457.90; Sessional Lecturer I Long Term – $9,930.79; Sessional Lecturer II – $10,121.77; Sessional Lecturer II Long Term – $10,326.62; Sessional Lecturer III – $10,362.76; Sessional Lecturer III Long Term – $10,570.02 (inclusive of vacation pay)
Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Minimum Qualifications:
Preferably holding a Ph.D or working towards a Ph.D. degree with extensive experience in forest conservation, forest biology, and tree identification; teaching experience an asset.
Description of Duties: Prepare and deliver lectures, organize guest speakers, maintain course notes and readings, organize lab and fieldwork sessions, set and mark course assignments, which may include mid-term, essay and final examination or other assignments, with the support of a TA; compile, record and submit final marks. Be available to students through regular office hours.
