Description:
This course provides students with an understanding of the distribution and ecology of the world’s major forested ecosystems and a broad grasp of major conservation biology issues in each. A summary of global physical geography and ecosystem classification in the opening weeks is followed by lectures, presentations, and discussions on key conservation biology issues organized into three modules: tropical forests, subtropical forests, and temperate forests. Topics include the evolution of concepts of forest conservation, sustainable forestry and ecosystem conservation; and the effectiveness of regulatory approaches and management practices in different societies, regions, and nations.
Class Schedule:
Lecture: Wednesdays 9:00AM – 12:00PM
Sessional dates of appointment: 1 January 2025 – 30 April 2025; please note that this position includes the completion of course work and grading not completed by 30 April 2025
Estimate of the course enrolment: Approximately 20-30 students
Salary:
Sessional Lecturer I – $9,457.90;
Sessional Lecturer I – Long Term – $9,930.79;
Sessional Lecturer II – $10,121.77;
Sessional Lecturer II – Long Term – $10,326.62;
Sessional Lecturer III – $10,362.76;
Sessional Lecturer III – Long Term – $10,570.02
Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Minimum Qualifications:
Conservation Biologist with extensive experience in forest biology, ecology, and geography; teaching experience an asset. Teaching certificates are also an asset.
Description of Duties: Prepare and deliver lectures, organize guest speakers and small field trips, maintain course notes and readings, set and mark course assignments, which may include mid-term, essay and final examination or other assignments; compile, record and submit final marks. Be available to students through regular office hours.
