Course description: This course tracks the war film, as a genre, across historical and national contexts, examining the cultural contours of war as spectacle, narrative, and ethical and political crisis.

Class schedule: Tuesday 11:00 – 15:00

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024.

Salary: 

Sessional Lecturer I: $9,457.90

Sessional Lecturer I, Long Term: $9,930.79

Sessional Lecturer II: $10,121.77

Sessional Lecturer III: $10,362.76

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications:

  • MA in Cinema/Film required; PhD in Cinema/Film strongly preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience teaching cinema at the university level, with a concentration on film history, theory, and/or analysis.
  • At least 5 years of experience marking undergraduate essays in cinema.
  • Evidence of recent teaching effectiveness.
  • Ability to teach online if public health issues require.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise in war cinema as a genre, as well as theories of trauma and displacement.

Description of duties: The Sessional Lecturer will follow the broad outline of the syllabus that has been established for the course, using any textbooks/films that may have been ordered. Revisions and/or updates to the curriculum should be discussed with the Director. They will lecture, grade assignments, hold office hours each week, and answer queries by email or appointment.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.

Please note: Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the Unit 3 collective agreement, and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.
