Course Number and Title: FAH465H1S Exhibiting China

Course Description: This seminar teaches students the skills required to curate an exhibition of Chinese materials. Working firsthand with objects of Chinese art and visual culture in local Toronto collections, students learn to document the object, assess authenticity, write object labels, panel texts, and catalogue essays. Students will thus prepare an exhibition, actual or virtual, of Chinese objects in local collections.

Class Schedule: Tuesdays 2:00-4:00 pm (In Person)

Sessional dates of appointment: January 6, 2025 to April 30, 2025; Final Assessment period April 9-30, 2025.

Please note: This position includes the completion of any course work and marking not finished by April 30, 2025.

Salary: 

  • Sessional Lecturer I $9,457.90
  • Sessional Lecturer I – Long Term $9,930.79
  • Sessional Lecturer II $10,121.77
  • Sessional Lecturer II – Long Term $10,326.62
  • Sessional Lecturer III $10,362.76
  • Sessional Lecturer III – Long Term $10,570.02

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications:

  • MA or PhD in Art History, Museum Studies, or a related field with a specialization in Chinese art and visual culture.
  • Curatorial experience working with Chinese art collections in museums or galleries.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and teaching university-level courses related to museum studies, curatorial practices, or Chinese art history.
  • Extensive knowledge of Chinese art history, material culture, and curatorial practices.
  • Strong understanding of exhibition design, object handling, and conservation principles.
  • Ability to establish partnerships with local Toronto collections to provide stuents with hands-on experience working with Chinese art objects.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor students throughout the exhibition planning and execution process.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and marking undergraduate assignments, exercises, and/or undergraduate essays in art history or a related field.

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Previous teaching experience in this or a similar course at the university level.

Description of duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a University credit course, including: preparing and delivering one 2-hour lecture per week and/or leading classroom discussions during the 2 contact hours each week; developing and publishing the syllabus and marking scheme through Quercus; preparing relevant assignments for student assessment, and (if applicable) setting and invigilating term tests and final examination / assignments for student assessment; grading and reporting of final grades; maintaining office hours for academic counseling of students; answer queries by email or appointment.
