Sessional Lecturer – ESS331H1F – Sedimentation and Stratigraphy

Course description:

Formal principles of stratigraphy, types of stratigraphic unit, methods of dating and correlation (biostratigraphic methods, magnetostratigraphy, radiometric dating). Methods of study in surface and subsurface (outcrop measurement, elementary introduction to wireline logs, seismic methods). The principles of facies analysis; sediment transport – sedimentary structures, the flow regime, and sediment gravity flows. The carbonate factory and carbonate rock classification. Trace fossils. Laboratory exercises in understanding facies mapping, isopachs and isolith maps. Distribution Requirements: Science; Breadth Requirements: The Physical and Mathematical Universes (5)

Schedule: Lectures Monday 3-5 and labs Friday 9-12, September 3 to December 3, 2024

Sessional dates: September 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024 

Rate of pay: 

Sessional Lecturer I: $9,457.90

Sessional Lecturer I, Long Term: $9,930.79

Sessional Lecturer II: $10,121.77

Sessional Lecturer II, Long Term: $10326.62

Sessional Lecturer III: $10,362.76

Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $10,570.02

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. degree in Earth Sciences with research specialization in the area of “Sedimentation and Stratigraphy. Previous teaching experience geosciences at the university level will be an asset. 

Description of duties: Planning and delivering lectures; planning labs: developing and administering grading, course assignments, tests, and exams; supervising TA’s; and providing scheduled office hours for academic counselling of students.
