Course description: Environmental design, in the context of this course, refers to design strategies that account for the ability of supporting ecosystems to continue to meet human needs and those of other lifeforms without diminishing biological diversity or environmental quality. This course takes a hands-on approach to investigating several environmental design issues: climate-responsive design, energy consumption, health and comfort, natural lighting and ventilation, and water management. Course assignments in previous years have involved students building up a design of a net-zero carbon residential building through several instructive design exercises during the semester, including hands-on measurement and calculation activities.

Estimated TA support: 117.5 

Class schedule: Lectures, Monday, 1 – 4 pm. 

Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2025 – April 30, 2025 

Salary:  Sessional Lecturer I – $9457.90; Sessional Lecturer I Long Term – $9930.79; 

Sessional Lecturer II – $10121.77; Sessional Lecturer II Long Term – $10326.62; 

Sessional Lecturer III – $10362.76; Sessional Lecturer III Long Term – $10570.02 

These salaries are inclusive of vacation pay. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail. 

Minimum Qualifications: PhD or masters with equivalent professional and/or academic experience required. Understanding of and practical experience with environmental design, as well as design principles and practices, is required. 

Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience teaching a similar course is desirable. 

Duties of course instructor: to teach the course: to develop and revise course curriculum; deliver weekly lectures or arrange guest lecturers; conduct weekly practical; arrange required readings; hold office hours; evaluate student performance, and supervise TA.
