Course Number and Name: EMU461H1 Music Education in a Cultural Perspective
Course Description: A seminar exploring music’s social nature, with special attention to the ways culture influences music perception, cognition, and value, and the way musical practices in turn influence culture and social relations. Issues addressed include: music education as intercultural education; music, gender, and power; the educational implications of cultural relativity; music education as an agent of social reproduction and/or transformation; social relations impicit in various musical and instructional pracitices; and music education’s moral significance. Emphasis is placed on practical pedagogical applications of world music.
Class Schedule: Thursdays 10am-12pm in the Fall term
September to December 2024
Salary: $9,457.90

Qualifications: Graduate degree in music education. Extensive experience teaching issues of cognition, value, educational implication of cultural relativity. Demonstrated excellence teaching music education at the university level.
Duties: Define course objectives and materials; provide clear guidelines on course requirements and regulations; teach classes as scheduled; administer and evaluate student assignments; prepare and submit final grade in accordance with policy. Maintain reasonable hours of student consultation outside scheduled class hours.
