Course Number and Title: EEB462H1F – Phylogenetic Inference: Methods and Applications
Course description: The representation of the evolutionary relationships in the form of phylogenetic trees has become a fundamental tool in many branches of biology. This course is an introduction to the core concepts and methods of phylogenetic reconstruction including parsimony, likelihood, and Bayesian techniques, as well as advanced topics such as divergence time estimation, species-tree inference, and species delimitation. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, and computer labs, students will master the theory and practice of phylogenetics.
Estimate of the course enrolment: 20
Estimate of TA support: 70 hours
Class Schedule: Lectures – Tuesdays 3:00pm-5:00pm; and Labs – Thursdays 4:00pm-7:00pm
Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024
Salary (0.25FCE): $4,728.95 for Sessional Lecturer I ($4,965.40 for SLI Long Term); $5,060.88 for Sessional Lecturer II ($5,163.31 for SLII Long Term); $5,181.38 for Sessional Lecturer III ($5,285.01 for SLIII Long Term), inclusive of vacation pay

Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of the subject area and ability in teaching the course subject at a university level. A strong background in phylogenetic tree concepts, ecology and/or evolutionary biology is required; PhD in biology is required; demonstrated evidence of excellence in teaching at the university level.
Preferred Qualifications: Past experience teaching this course or a similar university-level course.
Description of the duties: Prepare and deliver 50% of lectures and laboratories (remaining 50% of lectures and laboratories are taught by a faculty member); with co-instructor prepare syllabus and supervise teaching assistant(s) assigned to the course; prepare lab materials for the teaching assistant(s); conduct office hours; prepare, supervise, and grade of tests, assignments, and examinations in accordance with University regulations as described in the Faculty of Arts & Science Academic Handbook.
