Course Code & Title: AST424H1Y Introduction to Astrophysical Research (0.5 FCE)
Course Description: Course based on reading and research in individual and group formats. A literature study that develops methods and skills applicable to research in the physical sciences, with an emphasis on communication, including writing proposals and reports, and delivering presentations. This course is intended for students in the final year of the Astronomy & Astrophysics Major. Students are required to attend the weekly departmental colloquia. Not eligible for CR/NCR option.
Estimated course enrolment: 20-45 students
Estimated Teaching Assistance support: 200 hours
Teaching schedule (in person mode): Fridays 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM;
Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2024 – April 30, 2025
Qualifications:
Ph.D. with an academic background in astronomy or astrophysics. Both: 1) Recent research activity as indicated by refereed papers, and 2) experience in supervision of research projects is required. Relevant teaching experience at the university level.

Sessional Lecturer I $9,457.90;
Sessional Lecturer I – Long Term $9,930.79;
Sessional Lecturer II $10,121.77;
Sessional Lecturer II – Long Term $10,326.62;
Sessional Lecturer III $10,362.76;
Sessional Lecturer III – Long Term $10,570.02.

This job is posted in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement.
It is understood that some announcements of vacancies are tentative, pending final course determinations and enrolment. Should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.
Please note: Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the Unit 3 collective agreement, and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.
