The Service Mechanic position serves as a member of the University Housing and Residential Life Facilities team. The Service Mechanic position provides reactive and preventative general maintenance duties to provide a safe living environment for Temple students living on-campus. This position is a key role within the maintenance team for UHRL, and will work within a larger team of mechanics and skilled trade staff to maintain and repair various components within Temple’s housing and dining facilities that are in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and serve approximately 6,000 students, guests, and other stakeholders. This role supports the mission of the Division of Student Affairs and Temple University, and is accountable to all Division of Student Affairs (DoSA) Values which are Excellence, Inclusion, Innovation, Integrity, and Respect.
 
The Service Mechanic position is expected to possess overall building knowledge and expertise, as this role will often interact directly with students, guests, and their families who have reported facilities and maintenance concerns. Demonstrates a professional and ethical approach, as they will often be working within occupied suites or apartments. Diagnose and/or foresee equipment failures, make repairs to various fixtures, furniture, appliances, and equipment, and report issues and safety concerns to a supervisor as required. The responsibilities of this role also include, but are not limited to, assisting various skilled craft team members in the completion of their work, performing basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, and painting work that meet industry standards of quality and safety, and adherence to applicable codes and ordinances. The Service Mechanic will be responsible for mechanical proficiency, ensuring quality and safety, demonstrating experience in general building maintenance practices, and providing excellent customer service through high level communication and response. Performs other duties as assigned.

The Office of Housing Facilities provides building maintenance services, oversees and coordinates renovation and reconstruction projects, and provides cleaning and general building repairs in the residence halls.

Hourly rate – $29.57

This position requires a background check.

Required Education and Experience:
High School diploma or GED. Trade School certification in a related craft and at least three to five years of verifiable experience with a demonstrated skill level in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVACR and painting. Prior experience working in college housing, hotel, or multi-family work setting. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills and Abilities:
*Possession of a valid driver’s license. 
*Demonstrates a working knowledge of safety protocol related to carpentry, heating, electrical, plumbing, and other mechanical systems.
*Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including, but not limited to, safety, civility, information security, and adherence to discrimination policies and procedures including Temple University’s Affirmative Action Plan. 
*Adaptability to changing work priorities, meeting deadlines and schedules.
*Ability to manage multiple collaborative tasks and projects while working cooperatively as part of a team in an environment that often has constant interruptions and distractions.
*Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, along with the ability to comply with OSHA and other code and safety regulations.
*Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, along with the ability to effectively interact with a diverse population of students, parents and staff.
*Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for every student, and to be accountable to all Division of Student Affairs (DoSA) Values of Excellence, Inclusion, Innovation, Integrity, and Respect.
*Ability to read, interpret, and work from plans, drawings, and specifications with an ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the job.
*Ability to operate machinery and hand tools associated with maintenance and construction.
*Possesses strong interpersonal, oral, electronic, and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to communicate with a diverse community of students, stakeholders, and UHRL team members. 
*Must be available throughout the calendar year, including weekends and holidays, to respond to campus emergencies during off-shift hours

Preferred:
* Experience in working in high-rise buildings and knowledge of building codes.
* Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, MS Word & Outlook), including the ability to utilize an on-line maintenance database (Maintenance Direct).
