CBC News is seeking a Senior Writer to join the creative teams that craft early morning programming on CBC News Network from Wednesday through Sunday. This role is key to delivering on NN’s mission to prioritize live and breaking news that reflects and is relevant to people in Canada.

You’re an excellent broadcast writer, with a sharp eye for incorporating compelling visual elements and are unafraid to experiment with storytelling techniques. You must be a strong vetter, capable of working with the best journalists in the business. Video editing skills and a knowledge of automated control rooms are assets.

As a strong critical thinker, you also contribute to thoughtful editorial discussions and pitch stories and treatments. You must also have a clear understanding of CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices.

This is a collaborative work environment, so a team player with strong communications skills is a must. So is a proven ability to juggle and prioritize multiple stories and tasks, and to thrive in a fast-paced environment. And yes, you know how to have fun too!

This is a permanent full-time role based in Toronto, with scheduled shifts Wednesday to Friday 3:15-11:30 a.m., Saturday and Sunday, 4 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Key Tasks

  • Demonstrate and maintain exceptional skill in writing stories, intros and scripts for broadcast, using conversational language

  • Ability to quickly write accurate breaking news copy, and source and process accompanying elements

  • Critically edit material written by others and/or items produced by others

  • Gather information from a variety of reliable sources

  • Pitch and create story/coverage treatments in a clear and concise manner

  • Provide detailed analysis to enhance the understanding of the listener or viewer

  • Exercise advanced news judgment

  • Co-ordinate the exchange of program material

  • Familiar with CBC News Network’s banner guide, with clear understanding of when different styles are appropriate given the nature of the story

  • Adept with VizRT, as well as writing formats for automated control rooms

  • Desktop edit, mix, and/or direct the editing and mixing of audio/ visual elements.

Relevant skills and experience

  • A minimum of five years of recent relevant experience in a daily live news environment.

  • Minimum three years of experience writing for broadcast news.

  • Excellent writing, editing and production skills

  • A university degree or equivalent

  • Demonstrated news judgment

  • Broad range of interests and knowledge, such as politics, business, science, sports, entertainment, popular culture, technology and health and medicine

  • In-depth knowledge of Canadian and international news and current affairs

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Ability to handle a variety of functions quickly and efficiently in order to meet tight deadlines

  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple assignments at once

  • Understanding of CBC News operational programs including experience using Inews Toolbar, DTV, Vizrt and Avid Instinct

  • Familiarity with using graphic templates, ability to apply them for the best screen experience

  • Understanding of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices

  • Open mindset.
