Senior VMWare & NSX Engineer

This role is based within the Infrastructure function of IT & Digital at the University. It is an exciting time to be joining IT & Digital, with a transformational Cloud Infrastructure Programme underway.  there is a strategy to (where appropriate) migrate from legacy on-premises infrastructure to cloud infrastructure services or solutions. There are multiple projects running under the programme, including but not limited to an on-premises Data Centre relocation, migration of VMWare on-premises hosting to Azure VMWare Solution, NSX-T security micro-segmentation implementation, migrating to a new hybrid-cloud data protection backup solution and a campus-wide wired and wireless network upgrade.

About the role:
This senior engineer role is responsible for leading on the management of the VMWare platform and supporting both the migration to Azure VMWare Solution project and assisting with operational activities. In addition, the role will lead on the management of networks in NSX/NSX-T, implementing micro segmentation across servers/services, following best security principles.

The role will also involve managing backup and file storage infrastructure services and utilising Microsoft Azure Cloud Infrastructure services where possible.

About you: 

You will have specialist skills and experience in the following areas:

  • Providing security and network support for physical networking and security system
  • Knowledge and skills of Microsoft Azure services relevant to the role and specialist area.
  • Ensuring network reliability and availability through well-planned and implemented solutions
  • Delivering network and security infrastructures
  • Developing, maintaining, and supporting networks in NSX/NSX-T
  • Delivering micro segmentation across many servers/services, following security principles
  • Experience in gathering service connectivity requirements
  • Experience in automating policy generation through scripting languages like PowerShell
  • A good understanding of NSX API’s
  • Implementing networking and VXLAN technologies
  • Monitoring the automation of network deployment and configuration, along with the integration of infrastructure (computer/storage) automation
  • Configuring and monitoring network security layers
  • Supporting the operations and maintenance of the VMware virtual infrastructure
  • Maintaining VMware vROps and reporting for confirmation, troubleshooting, and capacity planning.
  • Improving customized outlines using NSX, vRA, and vRO to automate and simplify tasks
  • Duplicating virtual machines and server appliances.
  • Backing up virtual machines and supporting virtual machine infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of enterprise security and backup products, such as Sophos Central and Rubrik.
  • Ability to communicate work completed clearly via documentation and training other team members.
  • Communicating and presenting complex information to technical and non-technical stakeholders, both verbally and in written form

In recognition of staff contributions to the University’s achievements during the 2021/2022 academic year, an additional discretionary payment of 2% per annum will be added to your salary until 31/07/23 in order to ensure consistency amongst existing and incoming staff.  This additional 2% will be paid pro rata in equal monthly installments, on top of your salary each month until 31/07/23.
