Discovery to Impact, The University of Texas at Austin’s group leading the university’s research commercialization efforts, is seeking a Senior Technology Licensing Specialist to manage the pipeline of software and patent license agreements for computer science technologies. The Senior Licensing Specialist will be a part of the Licensing and Collaborative Research team whose mission is to help realize the societal and economic impact of technologies invented at The University of Texas at Austin’s by maximizing the velocity and quality of IP-transfer agreements to industry partners including startups.

Purpose

Manage pipeline of options, licenses (exclusive and non-exclusive), technology validation agreements, and inter-institutional agreements for technologies in the computer sciences or physical sciences.

Responsibilities

  • Draft and negotiate new contracts with industry partners, including startups, to minimize friction and maximize deal flow.

  • Collaborate with the Business Development team to structure partnerships and develop term sheets.

  • Close deals that will lead to advancement of University intellectual property.

  • Manage relationships with industry partners once a contract is executed, regularly engaging with partners to foster productive alliances.

  • Negotiate contract amendments.

  • Coordinate with the Intellectual Property (IP) and Business Development (BD) teams on continuous advancement of the Computer Science intellectual property portfolio.

  • Actively engage in outreach with the UT Austin faculty and the Austin community to raise awareness of the services provided by Discovery to Impact, promote a culture of innovation, and share the institution’s successes.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering, computer sciences, software engineering, or related field.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working within computer science sector, including but not limited to the fields of digital health, bioinformatics, software, statistics, or artificial intelligence,

  • Experience drafting and negotiating contracts with licensing terms for patent and non-patent intellectual property such as copyrighted software.

  • Experience with computer programming and commercial software development.

  • Knowledge of basic principles of patent law, copyright law, and licensing.

  • Knowledge of basic principles of open-source software licensing.

  • Proven excellent administrative and communication skills.

  • Proven ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders to achieve consensus and promote good long-term relationships.

  • Ability to work independently and solve problems.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in computer sciences (e.g., electrical and computer engineering, computer sciences, software engineering).

  • Demonstrated success in developing private sector partnerships for scientific technologies.

  • Knowledge of contract and IP laws, USPTO guidelines for patents and copyrights, and industry trends in Computer Science and software.

  • Extensive knowledge of partnering with industry, licensing, and policies/issues relating to commercialization of university science-based research.

  • Experience collaborating with IP and business development teams to determine optimal strategies for commercializing IP.

  • Demonstrated expertise and knowledge of contract and IP laws, University policies, and industry trends in computer science and software.
